Apparently Joe Burrow is next up. You assume Herbert will be highest paid QB in the league right up until that contract breaks.

Mahomes is now the 8th highest paid!

It's now or never for Chargers coach Staley. Needs to win playoff games.

Meanwhile, Aaron Rodgers is apparently taking a $35m pay cut to be a Jet and hinting that he wants to play multiple seasons. That man wants a ring and is doing what it takes. I don't really buy the multiple years thing, I think he goes year by year, but I buy that he's super focused on winning and will do what it takes.

Next question is does he bounce back from a down season or is he going into age related decline. Jets play the Hof game next week, but don't expect to see him playing.

Ha, yeah it's weird to see the Jets as contenders for the first time in about a decade. But once you rule out all the teams with a settled QB (and therefore wouldn't be trading for Rodgers) the Jets were probably his best bet.

best bet and contenders are not the same thing

they won't even win their division. And my not get a wildcard depending on what Miami do.

Yep, Bills are comfortable favourites, and the AFC East is a tough division. But from Rodgers perspective it's a borderline top 5 defense that had the worst QB play in the league but still managed 7 wins. Competent, league average QB play probably gets them another 3 wins at least which would have had them in the playoffs.

This season is a new year and maybe we get regressions and injuries. The Jets aren't a particularly strong regression candidate because they didn't have a ton of fumble luck and the defence wasn't reliant on takeaways. The defence did have a good year in terms of injury luck so maybe that changes. And of course if Rodgers goes down than all goes out the window.

yeah, every year there are raises and falls.

I wouldn't mind seeing the Jets go well, but i don't like Rodgers much so i'm not actively rooting for them.

I'm stuck hoping our ridiculously expensive QB doesn't stink the place out again, dooming the team for the forseeable future

The difference in quality between the AFC and NFC QBs is insane.

AFC has Mahommes, Allen, Burrow, Lamar, Herbert, Lawrence, Rodgers etc

NFC has Jalen Hurts and....old Matt Stafford? Big question marks everywhere. I'm hopeful for Brock Purdy but he could easily max out as a Jimmy G middle of the road QB.

    huh - any particular reason?

I'm planning a Tuesday Night Football regular get together this year - a few folk to watch MNF on delay. NZ timing not bad ... but DAZN sucks balls on quality at the moment; weighing up that risk against just getting Sky Sport Now

Huge year for Brock. He needs to avoid the sophomore slump, and hopefully show can throw it down the field. I remember him showing ability last season with throws down field

Agreed. He also needs to demonstrate he can play a full season healthy though I think part of that is on Shanahan as his QBs are always getting hurt.

It's kind of amazing that Trey Lance is on the verge of a historic bust (they traded three firsts for him!) but it basically doesn't matter since they drafted Purdy and already had an amazingly talented roster. Kind of reminds me of the Ryan Leaf pick - a disaster pick but Bobby Beathard's achievements make you forget that he made that call (traded up for him too)

Some injury drama - Jalen Ramsey and Joe Burrow both carted off. Not sure on Ramsey's prognosis, but the Bengals don't seem too stressed about Burrow at the moment.

Sean Payton is an arrogant prick but its refreshing to hear a coach talk so candidly to the press.

Payton destroying last year's Broncos regime

    One for you @mariner4life

It might have been one of the worst coaching jobs in the history of the NFL,” Payton told Bell. “That’s how bad it was.”

Payton made it clear that “everybody’s got a little stink on their hands,” for what happened last year, even if most of the stench came from Hackett.

“There’s 20 dirty hands, for what was allowed, tolerated in the fricking training rooms, the meeting rooms,” Payton said, an apparent reference to Hackett allowing Wilson’s entourage to have an active presence in the facility.

“The offense. I don’t know Hackett. A lot of people had dirt on their hands. It wasn’t just Russell [Wilson]. He didn’t just flip. He still has it. This B.S. that he hit a wall? Shoot, they couldn’t get a play in. They were 29th in the league in pre-snap penalties on both sides of the ball.”

“It doesn’t happen often where an NFL team or organization gets embarrassed,” Payton told Bell. “And that happened here. Part of it was their own fault, relative to spending so much fucking time trying to win the offseason — the P.R., the pomp and circumstance, marching people around and all this stuff.”
