Moulin Rouge??????

I would have No Country For Old Men, Million Dollar Baby, Knocked Up,Mystic River, The Departed, Tsotsi and Super Troopers plus all the above movies except Moulin Rouge.
Moulin Rouge was crap, it was huge here in Oz but anything with Kidman in it and/or directed by Baz Lurhman gets huge raps here regardless of how good it is or not. Just like the last one they did..Australia? Even the shorts looked shocking and I hear not even Hugh Jackman could save that one.

I wouldn't have rated Slumdog in this list, nor Batman or Pirates. I think Elizabeth should be up there and what about RocknRolla ?

Saw Avatar 3D a few weeks back, it's very cool.
- Moulin Rouge! (2001)
-
Went to the movies last week for the first time in like ... ever (well - months ...).

The Princess and the Frog for Miss boo jr.

Enjoyable.

Was a cartoon rather than CGI but still cool.

Thought they would lose the little kids early on as it took a while to get to the frog part, and thought Mbj would be scared by the Shadows from the Other Side but she wasn't - so all good.

spoiler For those who see it - I did like how Ray got together with Evangeline! Sad but happy. spoiler -
The Tournament - every 7 years a bunch of the best assasins compete for loads of cash and kill one another. Loads of mindless action, Ving Rhames as the lead - 5.5/10

The Time Travellers Wife - drama, a tad confusing in places with all the time travelling all over the show, not to mention the rather, um, almost perverted premise to the whole movie, but was ok for what it was 6/10

Re-watched Kalifornia, top flick, and some great acting by Bradd Pitt as the likable but dangerous Early, shame few of his roles since have tested him much, but he is a great actor! (Se7en, Burn After Reading and Inglorious Basterds) -
oh, also endured Australia...

Dont think it was quite as bad as some have made out, not a 'great' flick, was cheesy and over the top, but then I think that is what they were aiming for. -
Have tried to watch Australia a few times (being played alot on sky at the moment) just cant get passed how cheesy, predictable, cliched and shit it is though.

If that was meant to be his masterpiece, defining piece of work then he fell well short.

Wasnt cheap to make either, not in the Avatar range, but i doubt the execs got much back from it.

Avatar on the other hand is raking it in, over $1.3b world wide so far. 2nd only to Titanic. -
The problem with Autralia is that even though the acting is good and the photography pretty amazing the way the story was put together is all over the place. Had the two main story arcs ran concurently instead of one after the other it would have made for a better movie I think.

At one point you think the movie is over, all ends well... but no.

What do you mean there's 90 minutes of movie left?!? How's that possible?! They've made it to Darwin. The cattle is on the boat. THE CATTLE IS ON THE BOAT! -
haha, I thought exactly that!! Looking at the clock thinking how is there over an left?

Also Virgil, the cheesiness does get toned down a little... -
I sat through 40 minutes of Australia while the wife had temporary control of the remote, and the acting, dialogue, and story was farking awful. I'm a fan of Hugh Jackman but he was just terrible in this. Kidman is in some sort of botox face freeze and the sanctimonious and condescending story was pathetic.

A complete waste of time. -
Ugh. Australia was total rubbish. I can't stand Nicole Kidman so that didn't help but the overall story is just crap.

Last movie I saw was Avatar in 3D. The special effects blew me away but the story is nothing spectacular.
I think thats generally the key to Cameron's success with his movies, they nearly always have a simple story line. Look how basic and cheesy Titanic was yet 90% of the worlds population fell for it.
Must look pretty good on a directors CV to have helmd the 2 most successful films in movie history. -
The Lovely Bones - was not a bad film, well acted, was a bit weird (arty, airy fairy?) in places, but without having read the book to know what they were trying to acheive or portray from those moments, they will remain weird.
You should read the book if you get a chance. It is not a big book, but is definitely worth a read. Although, now that you have seen the movie, it doesn't allow your imagination to take over as you will be replaying the scenes in your head from the movie. I am yet to see the movie. -
I just know everyone's waiting with bated breath to know my thoughts on Avatar. <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

First off, we didn't know it was only available in 3D in two cinemas in Northland/Auckland (Albany & Sylvia Park). The way the movie is being advertised we thought the movie was being shown in 3D everywhere. What's all that about?

We bowled up to the cinema in Whangarei and was just about to pay for our tickets and lollies when I asked where the 3D glasses were. That's when I learnt that Whangarei are only showing the movie in 2D <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':(' />

What's all the hype about if only a selected few cinemas around the country are showing it as how it's being promoted???? Isn't that false advertising?

We drove down to Albany and saw it there (catching up with friends afterwards so as to make it worth a tank of petrol!) <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Personally, we thought the movie is just like any other 3D movie. We were expecting something totally different...something really special. All the scenery etc could have been produced by every day special effects. Nice to see Weta involved though.

And the `animals' were pretty tame too. Very predictable. Flying things that looked like dragons, lizard-type things, big cat-like predators etc. I would have thought they could have come up with something better than that; especially for a world that was so spectacular.

The flowers that closed up and went underground and the little creatures that spun in the air were inspirational. Why couldn't the movie have been filled with more of this type of creature?

The idea behind the movie was good but we just thought it didn't quite make the mark. Next time a 3D movie comes out we think we'll wait for the dvd to come out!

Points out of 10 ... 7. -
Finally got round to watching Inglourious Basterds on DVD and if it wasn't for the brilliant and funny (not to mention sinister) performance by Christoph Waltz as Hans Landa (aka the Jew Hunter) this film would have been rat-shit. The Bear Jew couldn't act which was a shame because that could have been a great character.

5.5/10 -
I watched the last half an hour of Australia, and got in the shit with the wife as i was laughing out loud. What an over the top cheese fest, fuck it was aweful. Baz Luhrmann makes horrible films (IMO), and the fact that some idiots rated Moulin Rouge the best movie of the decade says a lot about the decline of the western society.

In much better news, i re-watched Black Hawk Down on the weekend. Fucking. Awesome. Ignoring the politics, and the slight glorification of the US forces, the action in it is awesome. And once it kicks of it doesn't stop. Awesome gun battle after awesome gun battle. Eric Bana's character is the fucking man. Its awesome.
