Sports Betting

A game the TAB rules is 50/50 they give $1.87 odds. That should tell you all you need to know about your chances of making money. You need to be significantly luckier or smarter than the average person to make money. It's almost a bit hubristic to expect to break even. You can create a statistical programme if you want but the TAB's programmes are more advanced. The TAB are happy for you to make money if you are smart enough. They need some lucky people to make money so they can convince everyone else to lose money. If you enjoy it, go for it. Don't expect it to be paying for your travel in your 20's however.

I like to think this is my approach to sports betting. Not many of my bets don't come off (maybe 1 a week out of say 3-5) but they also don't pay out huge returns. If there is nothing that takes my fancy then I won't bet.
-

he hates the TAB, any bet over $1,000 is flagged and often not accepted. Plus they are so slow to update in game options, and even if the total points in the game has exceeded the amount bet on at say the 30th minute they wont pay out until the end of the game. with the overseas sites you get it back straight away and can reinvest..

I think it's bet fair where punters offer their own odds, you can choose from a variety of different people offering different odds.

He'll often put bets at the start of the game, like total points in the match, total tries etc. If it looks like he's going to lose then he's all over the in game options to cover his losses.

He also gets airpoints on the deposits he makes at these sites and travels for free all over the world.. so hes always withdarwing winnings and then reinvesting for airpoints

but agree with both of the above posters, at the end of the day it's gambling and the chance of losing is always there. Like bbarcs I couldnt take the risk.
-

Used to bet quite a bit, mainly on horses but sport as well from time to time.

Have cut back these days, but still have the odd punt if the odds are right. Often I bet against the team I support as a kind of insurance: I'm happy to lose $50 if the Waratahs/Wallabies win (a small price to pay for glory), but if they lose I have some cash to drown my sorrows. My account was in rude health after the England series, especially when the bookies put England as $2+ outsiders each test. And then the Canes were at $2.10 to beat the Tahs... too easy.

If you have a bit of restraint it's good. I'm more than happy not to put down any cash if the odds aren't juicy enough, and I don't need money riding on the game to enjoy it.
-
Scourge on society. Fuck the unending ads on TV, and the odds spots on every footy show.

Pleaseremembertogambleresponsibly cough

But not really. -

Interesting point about the odds being loaded against the punter so, statistically, you would be doing very well just to break even. I've heard stories about betting companies closing the accounts of successful punters. Does anyone know if this is true or just a myth?

Also agree with Barbarian that restraint is needed. I've betted a bit for fun in pretty small amounts it must be said. But the problem I encountered several times was that after I'd win, I'd want to bet again to keep the buzz going and normally then lose.

And as Mariner says, there is too much of it about. It's a bit depressing watching English Premier League games when both teams are sponsored by betting companies and the advertising hoardings in the stadium are flickering with even more betting companie

s...
-

A smart man would stay away, as there is only ever one winner at the end of the day - or there would be no such thing as betting agencies.

But if you're in it for a bit of fun and prepared to lose your money more often than not, go for it, it certainly does add a bit more spice to the games.
-
They absolutely close down successful accounts. One of my best mates is massively in to it, and he's had a few shut down.
-

I love betting on the footy. In all honesty, I probably had a problem with it when I was a bit younger. I bet much less now. That probably ties in with watching less footy too. Funnily enough, my bank account is much healthier now...

A poster once made a thread titled "I should have posted this yesterday..." with details of his winning bet. If that is not the best name for a gambling thread then I'm not here.

I agree there is way too much advertising on television and it really romanticises and normalises it. Kids nowadays are going to grow up thinking it's a regular part of life whereas when I was growing up the TAB was a dingy, smoky hole in the wall that was filled with depressed looking old men watching a flickering screen and then frustratingly tearing up tickets.

If you're looking to dip your toe in then I would recommend against having an app on your phone. It's just too easy to put a bet on. Too many times I have had a gutful of booze and thought it would be a good idea to bet on Filipino basketball or women's Polish handball. It gets a lot more real when you are handing your cash over.

My other advice is to not put too many legs in your multi. You can fill a multi with 10, 15, 20 "sure things" but something is about to come undone. A mate at the pub is always showing me a multi as long as his arm and wailing about the "sure thing" that should have won but the million to one shot at the end snatched away his pot of gold. Without fail, when I press him a bit more there is always something else that would have lost anyway.

I reckon you should pick 2-4 legs of $1.40 - $1.80 and put a medium sized bet on it. Then again, I am an idiot.

Winning is as simple as holding your dick and running through the minefield. If you make it through let me know how you did it.

Don't chase your losses.

Don't chase your losses.

I won't tell you a third time.

"Please gamble responsibly" is a nice way of saying gambling addiction destroys families.

Final point, the punters sometimes have a good idea of what is going on. If you see a handicap drop below, say, $1.80 something is up and it could be worth following the crowd. However, let me repeat myself, I am an idiot. Do not listen to me.

Good luck!
-

I use to mainly for emotional hedges.

I arranged RWC final 2011 the week earlier and it cost me about $3500 NZ in total. When I got there I chucked $500 on France to win the match at odds of about 7-1. The way I viewed it was 4,000 all in for the trip for the win, and nothing if we lost.

That's quite hard to do though, as you'll rarely find those odds for a head to head.
-

I suck...luckily I don't bet any more than $5 a pop (I guess $10 if you include a $5 EW bet) just had to top up my TAB account....

So, as someone else says, good luck, but don't expect to win. If you gamble long term, the only winner is usually the bookmaker... otherwise they'd be out of business (by definition)

As a punting mate once said to me; "you can tell who the punters are and who are the bookmakers by the cars in the car park".

I'll have a punt at the races, but that's part of the day. I almost never punt at a casino given it was pointed out to me that the payout odds are never what the actual odds are, so even when you win you're losing. Although knowing nothing about craps didn't stop me from winning two consecutive hard eights on a measly investment of $20. That was a nice way to start the night.
-

I think that hedge is also the biggest bet I've ever laid. I think I chucked a couple of hundred on France and it was money well spent during those last 10 minutes.

Other than that, I rarely bet. I stuck $50 on the Jaguares based on the strength of their squad and the odds offered, which is probably my only bet this year, and it was shit!
-

can get $36 for Highlanders, Chiefs and Crusaders at 1-12 and Hurricanes 13+ in a multi for a reason I expect....

Been burnt by margins too much so hardly take them now.

Also pretty much never do half time full time options unless I think the team that will win is likely to start slow (took this first test vs Wales this year). Otherwise not keen as teams generally won't give it their all to be ahead at half time; it's the full time that matters for them -
I find betting somewhat easy to win at provided

a) you only bet when you actually have a hunch/strong opinion who will win. If you watch the whole game of whatever sport you will probably develop strong opinions on who will win next week. But if you are unsure don't bet.
stay clear of $1.10 and $1.20 odds for single game bets - the risk and reward isn't there.
c) use multis - ie 4 games each paying $1.20 each adds up to a decent return
d) don't get sucked in to backing the underdog when they are paying very attractive odds. Only back them if you think they will win, not because of the
payoff.
e) betting on the spread is ok e.g. Landers -3.5, but try to stay away from plus or minus 13 points. Unless you know it will be a thumping e.g. the Sunwolves.
f) there is a feature in the TAB you can take advantage of. If you are convinced a team will win e.g. the Hurricanes tonight, but find the odds are too low
e.g. right now they are paying $1.14, try the halftime/fulltime double - it is paying $1.27 which is a bit better, especially if you throw it into a multi with another
overnight result you are sure of.

Thanks

Two more things -

1) Don't bet on things that are just flukes like what will the first stoppage in play be? e.g. scrum vs lineout
2) Do bet on the next man out in cricket in tests and ODIs - it is usually obvious to spot which batsman is better out of the two of them at the crease.
