NZR dumping SA and Arg (lesser extent) was fucking dumb. Any further questions? Now the 'SH' is only NZ and Oz, not great for our future

We've discussed this before. The NZRPA would love to see the ABs play in March without any buildup/preseason games - NOT!

I solved this with my 3 levels simultaneously concept

The usual suspects weren't having a bar of it

People just don't appreciate your genius. I know that feeling.

I for one - and in a very small minority - would love to see the NH season switch to the 'Summer' months to

    a) make the most of the better weather
    b) align the rugby calendar

If you've ever been to Edinburgh or Paris in January or February you'll understand - colder than a witch's tit

But money talks and bullshit walks

6N is the pre-eminent annual rugby competition with too much history and tradition to tamper with

My ideal scenario would be club/regional/provincial rugby followed by European cup competitions followed by 6N followed by domestic internationals / overseas tours / Lions

“…the logical [answer] is that as long as you play in a competition that New Zealand [Rugby] is an owner in, what about that?"

“In other words, if you play in Super Rugby Pacific, could you be eligible for the All Blacks? That to me, if there was to be a change, that’s probably the logical change to go to.”

About time to wake up to reality, eh?

    @kiwi_expat

Remember when Canberra-born Tyrel Lomax left the Rebels and signed for the Highlanders so he could realise his dream of playing for the All Blacks?

If he is playing in the exact same competition, why shouldn’t Lomax be considered for the All Blacks?

Umm, does anyone seriously think he'd have metamorphized into the player he is now if he stayed?

Ironically I think their chances are better than ever with clubs collapsing - they bring $$$ and the NH desparately need that right now.

For rugby reasons, I can't see it happening, but for commercial I suspect it's right back on the table

I dont think the unions are that poor, some not at all, just the private clubs in one country. Exception probably being Wales on both union level and semi-private clubs level.

So, I don't really see the overwhelming driver for it. Except that they are dumb. These same guys sold a % to CVC, after seeing it already in its mediocre action with the Premiership , that takes some extra level stupidity. So ..... it is a certainty then.

SR is a closed shop and it will only start to work when it is run like other international sports comps. The EPL, Top14 and NBA are successful because they are open and clubs compete, which is a very big driver for innovation. Players are contracted by clubs, not the national union or association. SR is nothing like that. Open economies work better than closed economies too. Why would people just getting into rugby watch SR? There are no players from their countries in the comp. Not wanted because of fear it might harm the ABs.

@kiwi_expat I know plenty of people overseas who were new to rugby and ended up watching SR because they like the style of rugby that is played in SR more than that in the NH. More running, fewer boring scrums etc. That's why many of my French friends watch SR, year after year. The reputation of the ABs draws people to watching SR. Also when clubs announce signings from the SH, people get curious and start watching, too. Plenty of reasons. Your constant negativity is more boring than scrums.

Can NZR+ be a digital game changer?

Can NZR+ be a digital game changer?

Rugby primes itself to enter the streaming market, the Super semis are set, the Warriors uptick gets really upticky, Australia wins the WTC, Djoker wins the French... and a couple of 'grubby' stories.

The Bounce has been reliably informed that when it comes to New Zealand television ratings, Super Rugby still trumps the Warriors and the NRL by a good margin. In fact, the Warriors brilliant win against Canberra was the fifth-highest rating of the weekend footy, behind the four Super Rugby playoffs. The biggest television audience was the Blues Friday-nighter against the Waratahs.

With the way the media go on you'd think that not a soul watches rugby in NZ and everyone watches the NRL constantly.

Which could be easily countered if the NZRU bothered to release information.
