NRL 2023 + Internationals

@canefan I have, I watch a lot of league. As I said, the Storm game, yes, they were robbed by the officials. The Roosters and Panthers games - nah.
The warriors tried to out grind the Panthers who are the best defensive side in the comp led by Shaun Johnson who thought that trying to kick in behind To'o, Turuva and Edwards for most of it was the best way of winning the game which doesn't usually work as Turuva and To'o especially are the best wingers at getting their sides out of the danger zones in the comp. There was no variety to Johnson's kicking game and Penrith were happy to roll the sleeves up and defend for most of it against a side that lacks spark on attack. One thing Webster deserves credit on is that he has got the Warriors fighting and they look fitter than previous seasons, they're just limited, which is understandable given their roster. Johnson also made a howler after the Curran break where he grubbered the ball dead when there were better options.
Their lack of options on attack was the Warriors problem in the last 2 weeks, not the refs like the fans and media are making it out to be.

this is disengenious. No fans think we lost to the Panthers because of the ref. They certainly didn't help though
We were opening the Panthers at will in the first half because we passed the ball. That is the key to beating the panthers, move the ball and don't allow their middle linespeed to swallow you.
Fatigue set in, and we went one out

I was at the Roosters game. We didn't do enough with the ball when we were hot on attack. But it's all the little calls they got that add up to making the game harder than it should be

Finishing a game with fit players seems to be the biggest headache. That probably makes those ref calls feel worse when you're hanging by a thread. This leads to change in game plan and game management.
I do agree though that although SJs kick chase is second to none, his execution in direction and length has not been great in the last two weeks for short and long options and for his effort Dylan Walker hasn't really provided any creative alternative either, putting more pressure on SJ.
Will be interesting if we have a new half this week and Walker back to rotating role which he is good at.

A month ago Walker was an asset, play just as a 5/8 is hurting his game. Be good to get another half in, when is TMM due back?
-
@mariner4life TMM not due back until round 15-16 unfortunately.
Rumour has it Metcalf could be finally good to go this week but I would surprised if he gets thrown straight into first grade, nothing like a cold Friday night to test a hammy though lol.
Volkman carving in reggies and part of the reason the warriors are second there, but plays same side of field as SJ, Webster obviously not sold on what he has seen yet as cover and I guess he is probably more worried about carrying two not so great tackling halves.
Im expecting to see Walker named again at 6, but hoping for something different
-
Volkman gets his chance at 6, Walker back on rotation.

I just had to Google ‘what is a hip drop tackle?’
I had no idea. I thought I’d pick up what it was by watching a few games, but no.
How/why has this become a thing?
Why the crackdown on this and not high tackles? And a big middle finger to the NRL and their refs who think old mate at Vodafone is a villain for simply speaking the truth.
How about look in the mirror, fluffybunnies.
Full credit to Andrew Webster for sticking to his guns and refusing to blame anyone but themselves for their losses, he’s clearly focused on changing the culture at the Warriors. It’s what that place needed.
You stick to that Andrew and us couch experts will worry about bagging out the NRL and their biased fluffybunny refs.
-
@Gunner genuine hip drops are pretty bad tackles that lead to injury (Pat Carrigan pulled off a bad one last year)
The NRL wanted to stamp them out. And so we get the current "reds under the bed" frenzy where everything is a hipdrop. And because getting a penalty is huge in the NRL, and getting an opposition player binned can go a long way to winning a game, players are staying down all the time now to try and get the bunker to rule on it.
The NRL think they are being clear on what is, and is not a hop drop. Instances in game say the refs and the bunker don't fucking know themselves.

Warriors get the win, 24-12 over the Bulldogs.
The refereeing of the contest for the ball in the air is like chalk and cheese between league and rugby.
DWZ was jumping to take a catch, Bulldogs player comes in underneath him and takes him out and it’s play on.
While he didn’t land badly, it’s a definite penalty and probably yellow card in rugby.

The One dude's comments came to fruition - reckon the Warriors were on the right side of the 50/50s this week.
-
@Nepia yep a couple went our way..
probably our best first half all year..second half we had no where near the same intensity but still stayed on the game.
thought young Volkman played ok too, really muscled up in defence too
now the bye, then a depleted Broncos in Napier..surely we can take that..lol...surely?
-
I watched the last 20 mins and it wasn't a great spectacle.
I see that Walters isn't happy with the ref from their game last night vs the Storm. The same ref who did the Warriors-Panthers game. Is he also on work experience?
One of the storm players came in as the third tackler and hit broncos player in the ribs. Andrew Johns alluded to similar incident the week before when one of our boys got sin binned
