I invested a lot of time into The Wall during Covid times. Decision at the end was that if you remove all the songs after Run Like Hell, it really is a masterpiece.

The Wall would make a great single CD (double LP) if you removed some of the fat. It's why I would only rank it 4th amongst their classic 1970s period albums.

@MN5 The start of Waters thinking it's his band so started the whole bloated look at me shit and politicising of their work.

Peak prog rock at a time when punk was exploding.

I'm probably most partial to Meddle and Wish You Were Here - although I didn't really like the later when it first game out.

UmmaGumma gets a bad rap but it does encapsulate all the craziness of the early Floyd.

@MN5 Animals is so underrated, and ahead of The Wall for me. I'm curious to listen to the new remix.

@dogmeat Meddle is great for Echoes and the two other big songs. The other three songs on the album don't do much for me.

I genuinely hate everything about “Wish you were here” the song. What was Gilmour thinking with his guitar tone on that ?

Floyd never went quite as “prog” as Yes did.

I always wondered why they were never bigger. Sure everyone knows “Owner of a lonely heart” and it’s still a goodie, but how many know of anything else they’ve done ? I always enjoyed listening to the old mans records, those guys could play and Jon Anderson had a magnificent voice.

    “Owner of a lonely heart”

Everyone knows it because it was a massive hit - after they sold out and teamed up with the Buggles FFS. Shittiest song they ever did. I guess they laughed all the way to the bank but talk about compromising your artistic integrity.

I was a massive Yes fan back in the 70's - had everything they recorded. Really orchestral pieces and enjoyed a great run of album chart success through the 70's and the occasional top 40 single even before Owner of A Lonely Heart.

I put an album of theirs on every few years and thinks fuck these guys are good - but within ten minutes I am bored rigid. In the main prog rock has not aged terribly well - but then neither have I.

I met Chris Squire once at his record label office in London. He was pretty rabid about his vegetarianism. Until I complemented him on hs nice boots

These would be my two favourite “tracks” of theirs ( I don’t think true prog rockers call their music “songs” ) showcases some serious talent amongst them.

I hear ya though, not something you can listen to all afternoon.

Meeting Squire would have been good fun, awesome bass player, I loved the tone he got too. Very grunty. Would not have picked him as a vegetarian though.

50 years ago today NZs first ever multi day music festival kicked off. Headlined by Black Sabbath and Fairport Convention it also featured the first ever performances by two iconic Kiwi bands Dragon and Split Ends ( later to become Enz)

It made international headlines coz the opening act Corben Simpson got his gear off and performed naked

I was too young to attend but I did convince the local record shop to give me their copy of the iconic promo poster which hung on my wall until I went overseas

“Woodstock Planned In Waikato” ran the headline in the New Zealand Herald. It had been a long time coming. Three years after the epochal Woodstock festival in upstate New York, New Zealand was still waiting for a Woodstock of its own. The Dick Frizzell

@MN5 @dogmeat not too too familiar with yes except for the obvious song. I do have a Trevor Rabin CD which is not bad. The 80s poffy hair mug shot might put someone off from listening but he is an excellent guitarist.

That deserves more upvotes than it has received IMO.

    @dogmeat

And You and I is bloody great and I loved Close to the Edge but Yes went OTT shit-burgers after Tales of Topographical Oceans. IMO.

Jon Anderson did some good stuff with Vangelis too.

@broughie I like 1980s Yes, and prefer Rabin to Howe as a guitarist. I've seen the latter twice in modern-day Yes and he seems bored on stage.

I hope @Tim realises National Radio has a Yacht Rock Special on right now

    RNZ National Live

Personally, I prefer the lunacy of Matinee Idle over the last two weeks, but someone must like Toto
