I have a bit of a love hate relationship with Pink Floyd.
You know how there’s that band that is famous for one song but you get annoyed cos their lesser known ones are so much better ? Pink Floyd are that multiplied by about 10…..I could pretty much go my entire life and be happy to never hear Money, Another brick in the wall, Wish you were here, Have a Cigar, learning to fly, a momentary lapse of reason…….
But then other well known ones like Us and Them, Comfortably Numb, Brain Damage, Eclipse etc are still great.
…..and then there’s this, such a masterpiece, captures them all at their best and in my opinion proves that Gilmour shits all over Waters as the star and driving force of the band. His guitar work is him at his best.
Very big of Waters to actually play Bass on this though AND do a good job !

Perhaps could be said of any band. Their popular songs get insufferable after a while. I love the wall and especially the lyrics. While not highlighting Gilmore brilliance on the guitar I love Nobody's home, Mother, Run line Hell, and Young Lust (great Guitar solo). This was my first intro to Pink Floyd.
Will listen to Echo after I work on my schedule.

@Tim I only ever recall hearing Rock Me Amadeus from them.
Did your one radio station up north only own the cassette single of Rock Me Amadeus?
Vienna Calling made the top 10 in the rest of NZ.

I blame the Sound for playing Floyd ALL THE FUCKEN TIME.
But fair point. Some bands more than others.

I invested a lot of time into The Wall during Covid times. Decision at the end was that if you remove all the songs after Run Like Hell, it really is a masterpiece. It just goes on too long and the end tracks add nothing other than a bit of indulgence.
You have to credit both Gilmour & Waters really, as although I completely agree with you regarding Gilmour as the star, Waters did do most of the writing.
Certainly agee with you re Money. It's not even in the best 5 songs on DSOTM.

@Nepia just like now, never been a huge listener to the radio, most 'new' stuff I hear now is via an algorithm
And that is annoying. The same stuff is regurgitated. Never like a song on Amazon. You'll hear it every day.
-
@broughie nah when i hear something 'new' i click into it, especially if it is a new band...sure there is repetition, but overall im happy with it (def not into listening to music as much as some here appear to be though) much prefer to most of the inane chat from so many DJs

Waters loses brownie points for me for being too lazy to play bass ( and some might argue Pink Floyds bass lines are tailor made for lazy bassists ) and being an overly preachy political dickhead rockstar ( Yeah I get you don’t like Trump, just shut up and play you cock ) but he was definitely a massive visionary and hugely important to the band.
My post probably should have recognised his efforts a bit more.

The Wall would make a great single CD (double LP) if you removed some of the fat. It's why I would only rank it 4th amongst their classic 1970s period albums.

Animals is a great album. I hope thats rated highly in there !

@MN5 The start of Waters thinking it's his band so started the whole bloated look at me shit and politicising of their work.
Peak prog rock at a time when punk was exploding.
I'm probably most partial to Meddle and Wish You Were Here - although I didn't really like the later when it first game out.
UmmaGumma gets a bad rap but it does encapsulate all the craziness of the early Floyd.
