FIFA World Cup 2022

England defender, Ben White, has left Qatat and flown home for personal reasons. The FA are not expecting him to return to the tournament.
-
Crazy to think that if Denmark had snagged a goal from one of their many chances, Tunisia would be going through!
I thought Denmark used the ball very very well, just lack a bit of class to finish. Oz aren’t going to score a lot of goals but their compact style seemed to frustrate Denmark.
Oz to get Argentina (likely). Plenty of neutrals will be on the Aussie wagon.
-
If Poland give up two more yellows then there will be a drawing of lots to decide the second spot in the group. (Changes if there are any more goals in either game though)
-
straya good at the kickball.
-
-
After watching Denmark and Poland play they'd have a pretty good team if you added Lewandowski with the other 10 Danish players. Denmark create chances but can't finish, while Poland don't even give Lewandowski a chance to score.

-
Tense, nervous headaches
Japan just equalised then nearly took the lead
Spain still sucking Sevilles in the changing room
-
Shit he’s given it
Looked out to me
Japan 2-1 Spain
-
That’s a poor decision. Surely that was out.
-
This is crazy!

Absolutely fucking bonkers. Germany and Spain going out? Unthinkable.

I only have half an eye and ear on the game but from the way the commentators are talking it's either Spain or Germany missing out, not both. Or am I missing something?

That's right. And if Costa Rica beat Germany BOTH of them go out.
Germany are playing to save Spain, in a way. Given their shared history of fascist dictators, it seems oddly right.
-
If Spain score Germany go thru.
-
Krauts gorrrrrrrrrrrrn
-
I was watching Germany-Costa Rica. Did Spain try to get an equaliser or were they happier to finish 2nd and avoid Croatia?

They kept trying.
-
One thing soccer has over rugby is short turn around times. Whereas rugby has a week between each knockout stage here it just keeps on going relentlessly.
-
Germans should have scored a quick three own goals in the last 2 minutes, to make Costa Rica go through instead of Spain - just out of spite

But like England rugby bereft of a Plan B
Teams now know how to beat Spain
- Get in their face
- Pace
- Have a dip from outside the box

I thought the ball had completely cleared the line, but like tennis it only had to be a blade of white grass and it’s in…
Happy for Japan, but geez that would be massive talking point if it was Spain that was being knocked out!

I have so many student emails explaining that ‘they might have Covid and need the morning to go see a doctor’ that I may as well cancel my classes today.

anyone who doesn't give their students the day off is a bum

And Belgium's "golden generation" crashes to an end with only 1 goal all tournament.

That's what they get for not being French or German or Dutch.
Except today, they are more German than either of the other 2.
-
It's sort of funny how all this stuff now comes out. I know SFA about the game but I wouldn't have expected us to beat either Euro nation and no idea about Tunisia. According to the maths we were going to finish bottom of our pool...
I take no particular joy in it beyond qualifying. We're $14 to beat Argentina so we're essentially fucked.
-
Ze Germans are crying foul over Japans goal as the ball appeared out but the ball must be 100% over the line and I think there is a smidge on the line
-
-
-
and just like that after failing to deter USA from joining the party of 16, the last remaining European Axis power was scuppered and Japan goes it alone..
-
A fun fact from ESPN: Japan scored 4 goals in the group stage (by 3 different players). They all play in Germany.

They should get a warm reception when they get back to the Fatherland

i would have said that was a mile out, apparently the whole sphere of the ball needs to cross the line, not just at ground level though....
Problem seems to be the rules not the decision.
-
@Crucial or how few people knew the rule, that does seem a bit ridiculous though

Italy didn't even show up, true to form

Yeah. I didn’t know but I dont follow wendyball.
Usually if a rule looks stupid it is.
Can a ball cross “the plane of touch” in the air and come back into play (like a curving kick)?
If the whole ball must cross the line for a goal the this instance look like play on to me.
