My teenage son is getting interest in boxing training, so we are getting a bag in the garage. Any tips regarding gear, eg gloves etc that would be needed or not needed?

Definitely wraps. If you had to forgo one of wraps or gloves against a bag, I'd drop the gloves. That way you still protect the wrists and to a lesser extent the hands.

Also inners aren't a bad thing for gloves - you can wash the inners.

I got a heavy bag, gloves and mitts for $40 off trademe. The bag was initially 18kg, I’ve stuffed the shit out of it with sand bags and taken the cloth out and got it close to 50kg.

Depending on the weight be careful about hitting it on the way back. Bad timing can result in bad wrist injuries ( insert predictable wrist injury jokes here ) also as things tend to sink it will be like concrete down the bottom.

Tell him to make sure when punching to “break” the bag, anyone can get one swinging and think they’re Mike Tyson, actually putting dents in it when you hit the same spot is satisfying.

Be a good Dad and hold it for him too.

I love heavy bag work, the other half doesn’t like the racket though so I try and time it for when she goes out.
