Raeburn Shield

@Davesofthunder Utrecht is a fantastic place to live in, too! Smaller than Amsterdam, but also has the canals and a stream going through it. The old architecture, art, music and lots of things to do. An international vibe, a university town with lots of young people and still the feel of a smaller city. I liked it much more than Amsterdam. But that was a few decades ago, so not sure how it is now.

@Davesofthunder I assume the Raeburn Shield is on the line again in next weekend's test?

It was a bit of a flying visit for me but it seemed a lovely spot and very nice hanging out at Utrecht Rugby Club.
Our hotel had a beautiful lake and water everywhere so it felt a real oasis.
Yep, Raeburn shield back on the line for the rest of the series so whatever happens there is a prize for the taking in game 3 ๐

@Davesofthunder Hi Dave, just wondering, is the Utrecht Shield on the line during the Rugby World Cup?

I think it is according to Dave's website. He had Eng (Holders) v Fiji as a challenge match.
The Shield was protected by Covid but England took it from NZ last year. -
Sorry @Stargazer , bit slow!
Yep, it is a true lineal title so once you hold it you have to defend it in every match.
Has made it to the final of every RWC ever so far(both Utrecht and Raeburn shields)

That would involve a team winning it off someone in pool play and then not qualifying for a QF. That would take some doing!

I was just reading a bit on the website of the World Rugby Museum, and found this little piece about Raeburn Place, the venue of the first men's international rugby match.

Things have changed a little bit now but I believe it is the very same ground now used as Edinburgh Academicals home.
We used to live about 100 metres away and regularly cut through to get to the Botanic Gardens which was the closest big park for exercise. At the time I never knew the significance, it was just the rugby ground down the road. Went back a few years ago and it has a rather flash grandstand/clubrooms now and is pretty much fenced/walled off. -
What legend made that image ๐๐

Maybe with the Ranfurly Shield in pieces, this is the time to make an actual Raeburn Shield?
Just donโt let it anyway near the Hawkes Bay.
i still find it amazing WR have snapped it up...some much more interesting than the proposed new world leagues or plate comps they come up with to add some meaning
we've also see more "upsets" in the past 10 years i feel so the chance it goes off to a tier two team one day seems more likely
