went and watched Waipu v Otamatea play on saturday and saw a team stacked with development players made to look very average by a Waipu team who like to through the ball around. the score line I thought actually flattered Otamatea as Mark Wells made a lot of changes in the 2nd half with 25mins to go which weakened the Waipu team and it took them 10-15 mins to get into the game. it was disappointing to see that Otamatea have gone away from the structure that took them to the semi finals last year and are trying to play an individual game. Unfortunately for Otamatea the lack of structure flows into their defense and this showed with the waipu team down to 14 men in the first half able to score 3 tries in 10mins. With all the talent that Otamatea have recruited the way they are playing must surely mean they are not training much. Waipu played their normal game and Phil Hulse son has arrived from over seas and slotted in to first five, a steady player nothing spectacular but looks like he can stick to a game plan which is all you want in a first five. the positive for waipu is it allowed Ben Mackin to slip back to full back and his decision making on attack and defense exposed Otamatea's weaknesses and shut down any momentum they had.I am surprised that Waipu never played in the forwards more as the fitness levels of Otamatea do not look great but when points are racking up I suppose it doesn't really matter. I must make a comment on the Waipu field and praise the ground keepers for the excellent state it is in, on wednesday they hosted Northland v Harbour, then on friday the junior rugby was played, saturday the same followed by the reserves and prems, with the weather during the week the way the ground held up was pretty good. Hopefully as we get closer to semi final rugby the teams can play better rugby and maybe make it more than a 2 horse race.

Otamatea v Mid Northern
Sharks v Waipu

Will be interesting to see the results of the mid nth v Otamatea game and sharks v Waipu game. Mid northerns been on a good roll all year long, I understand Otamatea have a couple of injured players and moulds hasn't been released from the blues. Also on a bit of a roll are the sharks who come up against an in form Waipu team who've been quietly racking up wins should be 2 great games. Putting my maroon glasses back on HoraHora will be looking to repeat what they did in the first round and ruck and maul there way to a victory against the very formidable OBM outfit, and the reserves will hopefully have Norm Maxwell playing for them. Should be fun -

You'd have to almost say Waipu will make the 4 from here (not sure who they have left to play).

Will be interesting to see who takes out the 4 way battle for the last semi final spot.
-
