This is like teams from two different divisions playing each other. Wallaroos basic skills a big step below the ferns - particularly set piece and ruck stuff.

@KiwiMurph Wayne Smith will be pulling his hair out after watching this performance.
Despite all the changes , some of the passing and basic handling has been Horrendous..
Wish someone would Ruby Tui to put her bloody boot away when she’s in a one on one situation..
The 6 for Australia has been superb

Disagree about Tui. Yep, she is overusing it but in the womens game it it can really pay off. Oz have been really lucky a couple of times with the bounce.

FFS that last scrum - Black THP folds sideways on engage and then gets the penalty for being rubbish

I hope tubic is nowhere near the cup squad, her passing had been laboured all game, and she poses to players under pressure far too often

Womens' rugby is a difficult watch.

That was a dreadful performance by the Ferns. A wake up call after the plaudits of the previous game.

The “bomb squad” tactic with the props is a crock of shit and WR need to stop it IMO.
Props off after 30 minutes (the proven period of a lower number of scrums) then the first string front row on for the guts of the game followed by injury replacements from the rested starters.
It’s just bullshit manipulation of the rules there to protect props.

The ferns were poor, ozzie brought rush defences and attacking the breakdown, so they did their part making the ferns poor. The ferns were still better than the ABs have been most of the year

Ruby Tui is always such a great interview. Best part of international rugby right now.

@Machpants Rubi on the soapbox pushing the virtues of Womens Rugby ..the only only problem is the product needs to be way better than what the Black Ferns dished up ..and before anybody jumps on their high horse I would be throwing out the same barbs if Males dished this rubbish up

By geez, much as I like the idea of women playing etc, it's pretty ordinary skillwise. Big ups to commentators tring to make like it was high quality rugby. Still think it will be ok a 4-5 years!
In saying that I admit to only seeing the second half, after the shield game.

I got home to see the last 15 mins and that was a hard watch. Maybe the 30 min highlights is all I will watch. Agree with @Crucial that NZ needed a game like this. Plenty to work on.

The problem is like any women's sport: variability. It isn't consistently good, because the underlying layers aren't consistently good - very early in the life cycle when you think about it.

NZ Womens Rugby had the dominance early doors because like most early-adopter sports, the naturally skilled people got all the game time despite being amateurs.
Aussie rugby has a very small base so you get the natural players dominating and the programs don't identify and bring through others; throw in NRLW and you're going to be hard-pressed to get the best, with the tip of the spear playing 7s in terms of skill level.

Now in the UK and France we're seeing investment and the consistency rise with regular competition. That will be interesting to watch this RWC in NZ.
