Black Caps tour of England 2022

Stats nerd time……
With a pretty ordinary return in this test Henry Nicholls once again drops under 40 in terms of career averages…..or in MN5s less than expert measuring yardstick he goes from “very good” to “good”. I’m not too worried though as this has happened before and a big hundred gets him back so we should be sweet by the third test.
Tom Latham is currently 40.59 so he might be in danger too and he’s looking particularly scratchy. He’s certainly living up to his minnow bashing reputation on this tour so far.
Blundell shoots up to 37.46 which is Watlingesque, I’m more than happy for that sort of return for a specialist keeper and I’m thrilled he’s had a good tour.
Johns son has exceeded all expectations. Gosh we’d be in trouble without his efforts.
Conway and Young have both been ok but one of them scoring much bigger would not have gone amiss.

English view: Black Caps 'frazzled, anxious' with test on knife-edge
...
“The pitch is playing well, Kyle Jamieson will not be fit to bowl and, psychologically, England must feel as if they have the upper hand, having hauled themselves back into contention, having conceded such a huge first innings total (off 553).”That England almost managed to match that total, being dismissed for 539, spoke volumes about the resilience in Stokes’ side and their ability to instantly throw the pressure back on the Black Caps as the tourists set about their second innings.
“Tom Latham’s brain might have been a bit frazzled after a lengthy period in the field. In any event, Latham’s decision to leave a ball from Anderson that crashed into his middle and off stump in the first over of New Zealand’s second innings was an early sign of uncertainty and an unduly generous way to gift Jimmy Anderson a 650th test wicket, a remarkable statistic for a fast bowler.”
...One thing is for sure, if the Black Caps have any chance of victory, then Southee and Henry can't bowl anywhere near as many hittable pies in the fourth innings. Could be a big night for Michael Bracewell.
The same guy who’s taken 27 first class wickets in 96 games ?
Bring back Mark Craig or Mitchell Santner
The same guy who took more wickets in the first innings than Tim Southee, Matt Henry, and Kyle Jamieson combined?
We probably need two bowlers to fire in tandem to win/save this one, so I'll clutch at any straw right now. Short of Matt Henry getting concussed while batting and Neil Wagner being subbed in...

Considering he has only started regularly bowling in the last two seasons, that statement probably isn't fair.

Ravindra made it to 217 for Durham in the end.
Did he get a county contract? Or do they arrange a fill in game for a guy on the edge of the squad?
-
@canefan I had read that it may just be for one game, but perhaps it could yet be extended depending on the needs of the Black Caps and of Durham:
The 22-year-old allrounder has been released from New Zealand’s touring party for the fixture and will provide cover for Keegan Petersen. The South African batter left Durham for personal reasons earlier this month.

Kinda irrelevant when his average is a woeful 47……

TV comms say 284 highest successful chase at Trent Bridge.
Nz was on the wrong end of that 284. In the 2004 series. This current nz team reminds me very much of the 2004 team actually, on the cusp of plummeting freefall.

There is a danger England will plunder our bowling attack. I hope Timmee can come back strong and stop bowling pies. If the ball isn't jagging around I always worry that Henry is also reduced to a pie chucker. Bracewell might be crucial if the pitch starts to exhibit some variable bounce

We have certainly come down since our WTC glory. The top order aren't firing right now, and Stead keeps leaving Wags on the bench

We'll always have the inaugural WTC. I should buy a replica to mount on the wall

Henry as 3rd seamer is just poor selection. It should be treated as a specialist position. We've been lucky enough to have 3 of our best old ball bowlers of all time in this squad (albeit all declining) . Henry isnt one of those 3.

Id love to be wrong, but I think it’ll be a looooong time before we see it back on these shores.
The Mace made its way to my local club when they did their tour, so I took the young fulla along and made him have a photo. He really didn’t want to, but he’ll appreciate the significance of it one day.

I'd pick, never. It was a miracle, and came at just the right time for us.

If not for Covid robbing the Aussies of a series in SA, we could have had to play them in the final.... But you can only play who is in front of you, and we won fair and square

Either Stead or Kane or both have to answer for that one. It cost us a series in India and may cost us a series in England now

Who selects the side? I always assumed it was the Captain and the coach together, one of the few sports where Captains have that power
