@Canes4life Hard to believe that an absolute gun of a power winger like Bethel Malasia isn't in the squad. Our other winger, Josiah Sakaria not named either. Only 4 of the original 7 left. Ezra Malo was initially listed under Whanganui, but has joined the Hawke's Bay Academy.
Anyway, with Larsen still in charge, my expectations aren't very high.
I can probably pick a pretty strong side from the players selected but I’m having trouble picking wingers and props. Isi Saumaki would be one of them I would say, who are the others?
I’ve got this team as our top side so far but there are a few gaps to fill.
- Bradley Chrichton (Wellington)
- Raymond Tuputupu (Manawatu)
- ?
- Matt Monaghan (Hawkes Bay)
- ?
- Peter Lakai (Wellington)
- Cooper Flanders (Hawkes Bay)
- Dominic Ropeti (Wellington)
- Logan Henry (Manawatu)
- Harry Godfrey (Hawkes Bay)
- Isi Saumaki (Wellington)
- Riley Higgins (Wellington)
- Kyle Brown (Manawatu)
- ?
- Chicago Doyle (Wellington)
@bobily2 is right. You've got the wrong Logan Henry. I expect the first-choice halfback to be Jordi Viljoen.

@Bovidae Jordi Viljoen is a halfback.
I realise that, as I've seen him play for both Palmy and Hastings.
Two points made in the same post, as all three hookers in the Hurricanes U20 squad are from Manawatu.

Lol what are the chances of two Logan Henry's playing rugby in Manawatu. Thanks for clarifying.

There is also Vernon Bason who could potentially be the best of the lot (also from Manawatu) but he's still in his final year of school.

Yes, he looks promising.
Last year it was Ben Strang (who played for the Turbos) and Tuputupu. Bryn Gordon is in the Barbarians again. As I said, full of them.

To answer my own question via Waikato's FB page:
I will be interested to see the official Chiefs media release because there are a couple of notable omissions, one I thought was a good chance of being the captain. Maybe they are injured.
Note: Te Rama Reuben is unavailable due to injury.

@Tim it took some convincing to get Northland Prop JT Pont Bellamy across the line ..Blues forward coach Stephen Bates was not convinced ., Northland kicked up stink as Pont Bellamy despite his age was putting up better numbers in terms fitness and gym work than any of the other props ..
JT Pont Bellamy more than looked after his side of the scrum despite the chiefs doing the business in preseason game on Saturday .
This is a kid to watch moving forward , played for Kelston Boys XV last year . -
@Steven-Harris Out of interest, do you know where the Blues-Chiefs game was played?
Scrummaging props are always a weakness for the NZ U20s, so it will be interesting to see how the scrum battles go in the tournament.
-
@Steven-Harris what is more concerning, if true is the lack of interest in him from the Northland coaches, who again, if rumours are true, have barely seen him play.
If it were me, I'd be all over him for someone to develop and build.

@Bovidae game was played at Pukekohe on Saturday ..
chiefs won 55-17 ..Blues started with their top lineup in the first half and were very competitive but changed most of the team in the 2nd half and the difference in depth stood out . -
A brief summary of each team, including players to look out for, captains etc.
