@Stargazer I forgot about 1995.... For such a great rugby nation, it is odd that SA haven't had another chance to host, Australia's wait has been far shorter since 2003
Imagine the security requirements!
Yup. Might be one reason why they don't want to go back to the Republic

Rugby World Cup 2031 could be played in the summer to avoid NFL clash as US win race to host
The US will stage the 2031 men’s edition and the women’s two years later, but the NFL season's September start could force a date switch
The 2031 Rugby World Cup could be played in summer to avoid a clash with the NFL and enable the use of their stadiums after hosting rights were awarded to the United States for the first time.
Rugby chiefs are considering the drastic change that would enable them to stage matches in American football stadiums - and pleaded for a “grown up discussion” with domestic leagues to facilitate the new dates.
The US will stage both the 2031 men’s edition of the World Cup as well as the women’s two years later, with England handed the 2025 women’s Rugby World Cup and Australia snapping up both tournaments in 2027 and 2029.
There are more than 20 NFL stadiums included as part of the proposal for hosting both the 2031 and 2033 World Cups, as well as Major League Soccer venues.
Alan Gilpin, World Rugby chief executive, confirmed the tournament window could be changed. “We would consider moving [the] Rugby World Cup,” he said.
“If you think of the 2003 World Cup in Australia, it was slightly later than the window we have got now and the certainty we have got from today is to spend the time thinking about the benefits and challenges involved in that and it would involve some really grown-up discussions with leagues around the world and the impact that could have.”
Gilpin was keen to play down comparisons with this year’s football World Cup, which is being held in November and December in Qatar.
“We are not going to do a Qatar and plonk it in the middle of other competitions. There are those conversations to be had,” he added.
There could be further benefits to World Rugby, who are keen to gain a foothold in the American market and Gilpin claims that the tournament could become part of the American consciousness with the support of the NFL sides whose grounds he intends to sub-let.
“What has been interesting in the bid has been the supportive nature of a lot of the NFL franchises,” he added. “Can we be smart around that? If we could harness a little bit of a partnership with the NFL franchises around hosting, the ability for [the World Cup] to come alive quickly would be fantastic.” -

How come this shit wasn’t organised before granting hosting rights?
Let’s be smart about this

Shows that world rugby is still run like amateur hour compared to other big sports

To be fair there are a lot of stadia in the US with great capacity. Lots of universities have comparable stadia than many of world rugby's biggest. But I agree that in terms of prestige for a world tournament, they want to be using the best. A quick search suggests that the average capacity for an NFL stadium is 75000. Even the LA collisseum can seat 78K. Would they fill that for every game?

These are the 25 prospective host cities:
Atlanta; Austin; Baltimore; Birmingham; Boston; Charlotte; Chicago; Dallas; Denver; Glendale; Houston; Kansas City; Los Angeles; Minneapolis; Nashville; New York/New Jersey; Orlando; Philadelphia; Pittsburgh; San Diego; San Francisco Bay Area; Seattle; Washington, D.C.
To attract overseas fans they will need to concentrate each pool in certain parts of the country, otherwise expect to be taking a lot of plane trips.

Just like football World cups. One base city per group and all satellite venues need to be close by, say no more than 1 hour away

I think they have more than enough...
How many groups are there?
I think groups centred around Seattle (Can throw Vancouver a bone too), SF for starters would be good. I am not familiar with the main US bases for rugby but they have plenty of choice

I think his point is they are great NFL stadia, but not great for rugby. NFL tend to be skinnier - will limit space I expect.
Will be interested to see where it goes, as I'd love to go and do some of the trip over there. Honestly, I've found the pool stages more fun at times, as it's just a bunch of rugby loving folk out on the lash. Great times, and less anxiety than the risk of yet another QF SF loss. Yes, I'm bracing myself.

If they cant make the ground full size I would prefer to avoid NFL stadia. The game at Soldier field made expansive rugby very difficult

The fact that they’re looking to host the WC earlier than normal, pushing it to the Summer months not early Autumn.
Good luck if you’re based south of the Mason Dixon Line.
In fact, everywhere but the West Coast will be unbearable in August.
