Just this minute back from The Nest where things are ramping up nicely for a big night ahead. Naturally given the time since the ref blew for no side my memory of exact happenings are slightly skewed, even allowing for the fact that there was no draft beer on tap, something that is happening all too often at rugby clubs these days. Did not think DB Export could taste almost acceptable but that has to be weighed against the fact the only other serious choice was Tui!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
God I just love the feeling and atmosphere I get the moment I walk into my home club.Back to the game it was effectively all over within the first 10 to fifteen minutes when my guys showed they were completely on top and looked likely to score almost anytime they won possession and from anywhere on the field. Think it was something like 35 - 07 at halftime and we rolled on abut five subs within minutes of the restart. Naturally the game became a bit more even for about the next 25 minutes as the rollocking Pirates must have got at halftime coupled with the mass changes in the home lineup taking effect.
Tech looked simply a class above in fitness, skills and speed right from the start and used it too good effect right throughout and ran in a couple of nice wide ranging backline tries as they used extra numbers and speed too good effect. We were also helped by Sheridan Rangihuna's pin point goalkicking from out wide making conversions almost a formality.
Notable was the large number of young players dressed in scarlet, the average age of the forward pack was said to be less than about 21 during the aftermatch speeches. The backline was a bit different with a couple of old wise heads offsetting a number of youngsters. All things considered Pirates did about as well as could be expected given the uncertain start they had prior to the season, they were only promoted to Premier Grade rather late in the piece so did not have the buildup and recruitment opportunities they would normally have had. Had my guys kept up the intensity of the first half right throughout the score could have been over the sixty to seventy point mark. That is wasn't was credit to Pirates.
@Magpie_in_aus Other Texans results were something like
Reserves 26 - 10 Eskview
Women won over Hastings RSC by a score I can't recall but it was something like about 15 points or so from memory
Colts had a byeEDIT: Sorry but forgot to mention that Ayden Clarke still has a massive boot on him, regularly knocking off over 50 metres from his punts. On the other side he is further away from playing 80/80s than I am!.

@Number-10 My stay up here is for at least two more weeks but that might stretch out given a couple of unexpected things that have happened in the last day or so. I know the club in Wellington has a big social event planned for that weekend but the way events are unfolding it might require my presence here in the Bay for a bit longer than originally anticipated.
Incidentally Taradale was my father's (and brothers) club and my association with Tech comes through a maternal uncle who played there in the late 1930s/early 40s before he paid the ultimate sacrifice over France in 1942. -
Have been flat out and MIA from the fern. Great to see from skimming through the posts Tech is still the best club with the best players and supporters. Likely best looking and most modest too. Couple 69 point wins very nicccce as well.

Ah, so Tech fans are the Cantabs of HB.

@Nepia It is generally a long time between drinks so to speak when you are a Tech Rugby supporter so we certainly enjoy our better seasons! Come summer time it is a completely different situation with the Texans having been NZ One Day 50 Over Club Cricket Champions since about 2018!

TBF, wasn't talking about you old timers, just referring to @Magpie_in_aus doing his best Canerby/Phooey impression.

No 1, he's back! Hallelujah says @Stargazer
I hope to be at Farndon Park after taking in NBHS v Well Coll kicking off at 12.30pm. Will probably only manage to see the first half of the Mighty Altherm Texans as I'm off to Meeanee Speedway for the finals night of the Peter Barry Memorial Teams Racing Championships where I will probably run into @Stockcar86 The first race there is at 4.00pm so I will probably not be in a position to comment about anything rugby until latish Saturday night. It promises to be a challenging day with the temperature in Meeanee at the moment (10.32am) just 9.6 degrees (due to get to 20 according to the radio forecast!!!!) so will be rather chilled when the speedway finishes around 8.00pm. Might have to take the hip flask to ward off the chill!

@Stargazer Spoke briefly to a couple of guys at The Nest last Saturday night and they said he was improving and expected to be back sometime soon. Did not speak to Tim himself as he and his father appeared to be in discussion with the others at their bar leaner (two across from the one I was at) and it would be rude to interrupt.

Can't find the Clive lineup but interesting to note the referees allocated premier games this week include Nick Hogan, Sheldon Eden-Whaitiri, Daniel Waenga and Tipene Cotterell all who have refereed in the NPC with some of them also having had Super Rugby appointments. There are another couple whose names escape me for the moment who have had first class appointments not reffing at premier level this week, probably doing Tranzit games at NBHS????? That is a real feather in the cap of those involved in the refereeing circles in Hawkes Bay. All is not 100% rosy however as, like a number of other provinces, there is a shortage of numbers to ensure all games have "qualified" refs rather than having to rely on well meaning volunteers and dads at Junior levels.
Things are looking up a bit with the thermometer now showing a reading of 10.5 degrees!

Nash Cup round 5 full time scores (match sheets under the links):
Taradale 66 - 20 MAC
Clive 7 - 75 Tech
Pirates 14 - 59 NOBM
Hastings 32 - 33 Villagers
Central 28 - 32 Tamatea
Those lopsided scores aren't a good sign. In the case of Clive, it's clear they've lost a lot of their players to Moana Pasifika, but not sure what's causing the other big scores.
