My final word on the bias debate is that I personally found it very difficult to referee a team I had any association with. I am pretty sure I was much harder on "my" team than the opposition.

Maybe a few years ago there was some scullduggery but these days I refuse to believe that any professional referees show bias (one saffer ref excluded who was quietly disposed of).

That's not to say there isn't an advantage derived from teams being refereed in a manner that they are used to/familiar with.
