Watching the first half I was pumped that the Chief forwards were matching the Tahs. I hate the Tahs too but do admire their forward power. The Chiefs might have won if they were able to retain the ball a little more in the second half and run the Tahs off their feet. Would have, could have, should have. I guess they finally were worn down. Nothing wrong with Canes game. The Tahs had a few more big bodies who performed more like themselves 2 years ago. I thought Harris played well and disagree in the seagulling claim by Nepia.

Looked like the tahs had a real plan to target Cane. 3 or 4 times I saw them push his head into the turf whilst he was on the ground

Better to try and hold the guy on the deck, rather than let him pick his next victim to choke and DDT. 😉

Watched game in full now. The execution was a little off in places, but the Tahs - to a man - turned up physically and just bossed the shit out of the Chiefs.

Some of the passing in the third quarter, where the game was basically won, is almost shockingly good to an Aussie rugby fan. A fair few Kiwis* would have to grudgingly admire some of the leadup work of the Tahs, and the Chiefs also had some fucking quick hands go on.

That was a good game of footy. Everything about it was competitive though, as I said earlier, the Chiefs were just going wide while the Tahs were heading up the fat man's track. Contrast of styles, but both were fairly effective.

What I think a few Tahs fans have forgotten (including me) is some missing players like Leith and Ngatai who were pretty handy.

As for the Cane haters: what the fuck have you been drinking? He was in everything, and toward the end missed a couple of tackles because half of your forwards went missing. Brodie who? Barely sighted. The young bloke playing 8 was so busy chasing Tahs' linebreaks he barely saw any ball, and then your hooker is seagulling out on the wing trying to be Dane Coles or something, when he should have been doing more of his good work in close.

They'll be shitty that they went into the mid-season break like that, and come out firing after.

* Cantabs, naturally, are excluded from this statement. Firstly, they don't consider themselves Kiwis unless there are minimum 50% of AB squad as Cantabs. Secondly, they're miserable fluffybunnies in general, who never support anyone but themselves.

I liked your post NTA but I'm unsure how you noticed Cane and missed Brodie - he's the big lunk who was doing a bunch of work.

I must say I didn't get much enjoyment from the Tahs interpassing etc on the night but it was good rugby to watch on the replay. Why the hell did they pick this game to start playing like a functioning team?

Yes - due to injuries only 33% of that Chiefs' squad should be Crusaders, so they don't make the support threshold! :)

Usually you see him running around with the pill and smashing blokes. It wasn't a very Brodie game from Brodie, IMHO. He might have been doing the dirty work, but then so must every other forward out there. The point is, they didn't really free up any of their fellow rugby players, trying instead to leave it to the backs (who it must be said, did good work, but aren't forwards).

Yea not all Cantabs are anti Chiefs. Look for example at how the most one eyed Cantab of recent years Steve Hansen has just chosen the Chiefs backline for the ABs...indicating he's a big fan of that positive attacking brand of rugby the Chiefs produce.

And what better wingers than Savea and Naholo to put the finishing touches to some of that mooloo magic conjured up by Cruden and Ngatai...

Of course Dave Rennie needs to be credited with turning the Chiefs into one of the greatest teams in world rugby...benefiting the ABs in the process and a great pity we are going to lose one of NZ's most awesome coaches next year by the sounds of it.

The Tahs were over physical in the rucks and Mr Peyper should have penalized them two or three times when they dived like men possessed on Chiefs players lying on the ground. That was intimidation and it worked. But Peyper is a South African and it is how rugby is played in Boer land.
