@machpants so it was you must be playing in Australia, then you could be overseas but played for the Wallabies 60 times, now it's half that. Entirely predictable slide down the slope to "are you eligible and willing to play for Australia?"

There a max of 3 though, so that’s one tightening of rules

@machpants not quite open slather, but means a lot of our 2- or 3-season Wallabies can head overseas and take the risk.

@antipodean open slather is inevitable. Probably for NZ too, a bit further down the line.

‘No lay down misère’: Australia’s 2027 World Cup bid hangs in the balance

‘No lay down misère’: Australia’s 2027 World Cup bid hangs in the balance

Rugby Australia is pulling out all stops to secure hundreds of millions in federal government support for its 2027 World Cup bid.

The news comes as Australia’s credibility as a host nation hangs in the balance. The Herald can reveal that with a little more than two months before the World Rugby Council votes to award hosting rights, RA has not yet secured a federal government funding commitment worth about $120 million.

The governing body has locked in a similar amount in state government funding but is yet to receive a commitment from Canberra. A federal government source indicated the Morrison Government was supportive of the bid but potentially not at the price RA was asking.

$120M to have a knock-on tourism effect of at least twice that. In limbo.

$4B disaster fund established after the fires of 2019 that is basically untouched.

$600M for a gas plant in NSW that could be a stranded asset before construction even begins? Shit yeah!

    Priorities.

@nepia Not really as good wingers are dime a dozen up in beautiful Fiji and they could do a job probably close to as good as Nemani does currently and be able to do it for quite a few more years as well given Nemani's increasing age and waistline.

True, I was purely thinking of the fact he's a Fijian player. I agree, better one of the 4m young Fijian wingers out there get a Drua contract.

I withdraw my earlier comment. He can weaken Australia's wing depth. 😉

This includes uncapped trio Cadeyrn Neville, Nick Frost and Ryan Lonergan, with Neville named despite missing a large amount of the season with injury.

All up there are eight uncapped players in the group, including Waratahs flyhalf Ben Donaldson and Reds fullback Jock Campbell.

Donaldson is amongst ten Waratahs named in the squad, with the 22-year-old named despite coming from the field during Saturday's win over the Rebels with a calf complaint.

He is joined by returning lock Jed Holloway and prop Harry Johnson-Holmes, earning call-ups after extended periods out of the national squad.

Meanwhile, Campbell earns a well-deserved call-up after missing selection last year, picking up from where he left off in 2022.

@kiwimurph 'Waratahs flyhalf Ben Donaldson'? Have the selectors not been watching any rugby?

Rennie is right about To'omua. I note that Toni Pulu is included in this group.

Get him in, have a look, tell him what to work on, send him back. It's a 40-man squad after all. They're looking at Caydern Neville who hasn't played a minute this year!

The Force aren't providing a 10 - Pasitoa too young, McIntyre not enough game time. Neither are the Rebels.

So you've got Lolesio, O'Connor, and Donaldson in your 40-man squad. We know who the two likelies are.
