From a Chiefs perspective, Lord had a really good first-up game. PSG was strong again.
Weber's passing stopped a few opportunities too. The Chiefs need to protect the halfbacks better.
Although he played well for the rest of it, I'm not ready to forgive PGS for the drop that gave them 7 points.
I'm fucking wild, the game went exactly as I predicted (and tipped at least, but that doesn't make me feel better, maybe I need to start betting on it so I'll get a monetary hit as well).
Edit: I picked the Blues to win it based on the quality of the bench, although Barrett was poor for a lot of it, he did well to help create that try, and we lose heaps when we don't have Taukei'aho out there.

How is Tiatia still a starting fullback in this comp. It really does bemuse me. Surely there are better options out there. Is Narawa injured?
Tiatia would have played against MP so missing that game meant a few players were selected this week (I think). If he is playing next week McMillan will deserve all the criticism pointed his way.

@steven-harris wonder if he's a bit gun-shy, certainly not as aggressive as he usually is.
-
@yeetyaah Its a funny game. We should have pissed it last week but lost, and we were easily 2nd best imo but somehow won today.
Impressed with Perofeta, Goodhue and Clarke today and Sotutu was very good off the back of the scrum going backwards a lot of the time.
-
@steven-harris Interesting, after the first 15-20 mins, I thought we were easily 2nd best but as you said, we somehow found a way to win unlike in previous years.

@kiwimurph Perofeta was top draw , Papalii not to far behind , but i was also impressed with Eklund and Christie ..
Caleb Clark despite his infraction was very good , Hoskings Sotutu had a better 2nd half and whilst not always showing out ,Goodhue has an incredible workrate and along with Sotutu is the only forwards to have played 2 full 80 minute gmes.
Odd game from Tom Robinson , nowhere near his best .Big red did his damnedest to give the game to the chiefs, last two penalties were him

Taukei'aho with 40 odd metres to Slater with zero sums up where we are at the moment with our bench.
Similar problem with Ross to Norris, who gave up two penalties.
Some bright points are that Lord went well, so we have three good locking options (plus McWhannel), so Vaa'ii might see more time at 6, where he was OK without being great.
we are getting no help from fullback though, which Perofeta showed is vital - Tiatia with 3 missed tackles, a turnover (not sure if that is the charge down which led to a try), and all of 13 metres. Fuuuuuuuuck.

Yeah I don't understand the obsession McMillian has for Tiatia.
He did come up with some real quality plays for canes, but interspersed with a lot of nothing

Ross was penalised in the scrum as well. I don't have any problems with Norris. Ta'avao's scrummaging is a big step down from Mafileo, however.
I am not defending Slater but he was subbed on late and the Chiefs were defending for most of that time. Hard to carry the ball when you don't have it. That said, no reason Thompson can't be rotated on the bench, as long as Taukei'aho played 60-70 mins.

Josh Ioane is showing why it was probably a mistake to come nort to get more gametime, he has had one good game, but looks a way from being an AB 10 tonight.
Holy overreaction batman.
Better for him to be starting than playing 12 or on the bench ala Landers.
Not sure he will be starting after this week, Gatland has been better ar 10. But do you think Ipane is pushing claims for Black jersey?
-
There's been a few close games in recent years between these sides. MacDonald's Blues are now 5 wins, 3 losses vs the Chiefs (including 4 wins in the last 5)
Blues v Chiefs results 2019-2022
For context Umaga and Kirwan never beat the Chiefs

?
I would have to say that the there were some tactical blunders today. Our defense out wide was shocking, going for a 7 man defensive scrum when we were down one man and the Chiefs had the weight advantage by 30kg was a fucken brain fart, lineouts need to be cleaned up. And why box kick in the last 2 minutes, just throwing the ball away.

I thought he was pushing his claims in week 1.
Obviously a step back this week. His 2nd game.
Going back to Gatland would be short-sighted - Ioane needs to clean up his errors but Gatland is a limited player who won't win you anything.

Gatland came on at he 47th minute and we scored one more try - off a scrum due to work from PGS and Weber. He's just not a great 10 with ball in hand and doesn't suit our uptempo game.
Previous to that, our best try came from a move where Ioane used his wide passing game to help make the space for ENS.
Anyway, I'm much much happier with Joane there than Gatland, even though he7s got a few things to work on.
