A forgotten gem.
The replay really shows how audacious this try was.
BTW, Happy New Year, boys. It goes without saying that this is our year!

I'm kind of glad Auckland had no NPC this year as it is quite exciting waiting to see how RTS can transition back into Rugby? No doubting his talent.
It took SBW two years in France then some time in NZ. I can't see him making consistent positive impace until after RWC.

@machpants dunno, SBW was a supreme athlete with a good skillset, what I've seen of RTS, he is that with brilliant skills and smarts too, I reckon he will transition much quicker, possibly with him hitting his straps at the RWC

I've no idea, I hope that's the case, but I wouldn't hold my breath!

A more recent example is Laumape. He played his first match for the Canes in 2016 and in 2017 he was starting for the AB's against the Lions
RTS > Laumape
It's impossible to know if he'll even succeed. I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't work out. I also wouldn't be surprised if he makes an AB squad this year

The only asterisk with that is Laumape was only really 3 years out of rugby, whereas RTS hasn't played a game since school, and I think he just dabbled in rugby as opposed to Laumape.

@nepia he played NZ schoolboys didn't he, which is a little more than dabbled...?
Edit - NZ schoolboys team he played in

I stand corrected, I knew he played Blues but didn't realise he made schoolboys. Put it this way Laumape was always a rugby player who spent a couple of years with the Warriors (IIRC he went to league because the Canes shunned him one year and the next year he made NZ Schools), RTS was always a league player who was apparently good enough to play NZ Schools through sheer talent.

RTS was pretty much a rugby guy coming through, he only joined his school's league team in his last year of school.

I used to post on a league forum where lots of posters were Aucklanders and they were adamant he was from a league family and that he'd always been a league player through his childhood. (But not worth a throwdown over, I'm happy to be wrong).

That's funny because when RTS was still in school, I use to bring him up on the league forums as someone to look out for and no one knew who he was.
His dad was a rugby player and trialed for Manu Samoa, so I don't believe he is from a league family. He also came up playing club rugby for East Tamaki.
