I reckon the biggest loser in all of this is Dr Shane Reti. I think he is a genuine asset to the National Party, especially in pandemic times, but he'll likely be tarred with the same brush as Collins and suffer a hefty demotion under any new regime.
They don't have a deep enough bench to get rid quality MPs.
Agree, and I haven't seen anything to suggest he's involved in the current scrap either (not publicly at least). He should definitely stay in the shadow cabinet.

He seems far more reasonable than this level of politics from what I've seen of him.

So Barry Soper just repeated what Bridges reportedly said. It wasn't even said to the MP in question, she just overheard it.
Bridges was talking about him and his wife trying for a daughter and made a joke about have to girl you have to go a little more shallow.
FFS, a mildly off colour joke she overheard.
Wow, that's crazy. It's also been reported on stuff today that Jacqui Dean voted for Bridges in the in-house leadership votes since this time. If that's the case, it beggars belief that she could then come out and say that she was offended by it still, all those years later.
I mean lets face it, none of us want to imagine what sort of strokes Simon Bridges does, but it's hardly a career-ending moment.

If she really is offended by it (and not just part of a Collins slash and burn tantrum) you have to wonder how she's survived parliament this long. That can't be the worst thing she's heard in there.
And there's a joke about all Bridge's strokes being shallow just sitting there.

Mark Mitchell is the Uncle of my mates from childhood. They are the spitting image of him. Stunningly relevant post I know.
I'm gonna give it a like anyway, because I quite like Mark Mitchell, if not only because he's an ex-cop and did some other cool stuff in the Middle East.
Equally unrelated, but on the topic of Barry Soper (mentioned above) - is there any other non-billionaire/sportsman in this country who punches so far above his weight?
-
I've met Bridges as in proper sit round table discussions as opposed to a handshake meet and greet. He's a vain, smug, spoiled little child of a man.
He's the first politician I'd met who made me look at Winston with more forgiving eyes.
Hopefully his time in the wilderness has taught him some lessons, but I doubt it. He was good in the first few weeks of the pandemic but he soon reverted to type which is the sort of bluster and BS that Peters built a career on. Must be a Tauranga thing.
I don't think he is what National need to lead them back from the precipice. they really need to get their shit together. We need a functioning opposition. Seymour's doing a great job but ACT are still a minor party.

Hard to imagine that there is. He's almost exactly twice her age and with his wheezing and coughing every time I hear him I think he's about to croak.

Holy Hell and all I thought Bridges was guilt of was an off colour joke.

The fact that he wrote a book is phenomenal. I'd rather shit in my hands and clap while reading Toni Street's book, than read Bridges' book...

Dr Reti fronting a press conference, and the opening statement was very brief - there was an urgent caucus meeting called following the press release, motion of no confidence was successful, Dr Reti automatically interim leader until leadership contest will be held at next Caucus meeting on Tuesday. Also a lot of answers along the lines of what happens in Caucus, stays in Caucus, and not discussing conversations had with colleagues, which is fair enough.

Painful questioning. Can't there be better system than yelling over each other?

So this! Barry is a tool too!
They should all have a number and then have a random number generator for who's turn it is to ask a question

Even when experienced ministers (either side) move around the room in a reasonably orderly fashion, they still get reporters trying to interject their questions (Barry Soper was particularly bad on Monday, but he's not the only one by any stretch).
VC e.g. Zoom at least has mute with a signal (a hand normally) and/or text chat so the questions can be gone through in a decent order.

That's quite funny as I've only seen him walking down the street and judging solely by appearances that's him to a tee.
Looked like he should be a used car salesman or real estate agent that specialises in slumlords.

Interested if anyone's opinion on Collins' alleged behaviour while in Key's govt has changed now? The Dirty Politics accusations were a bit OTT but the substance makes plenty of sense if this is how she operates.
The Oravida scandal also appears more likely. -

@tim Considering the Herald is now reporting that the slighted MP, Jacqui Dean, complained about it at the time five years ago and Bridges was spoken to by then-leader Bill English, then abso-fucking-lutely.
Jacqui is in the Class of 2005 alongside Judith and is very much a Collins fan.
I predict this will simply hasten the demise of Collins, and it will backfire badly on her.
your post aged well. I don't often get to say that in TSF (about posts in general, I hasten to add).
