Some worrying parallels here

If Ardern pulled the pin prior to the next election Labour will be in big trouble, without her personality cult they are Little, Hipkins and Robertson
-
@canefan It's an opinion piece. What I hear is Cindy is more Aunty Helen than Poppa Lange. A policy wonk imperator who is unlikely to be anyone's puppet.
I agree that without her Labour are toast. The next few months will decide whether they are doomed even if she stays

Sounds like a really stodgy law firm

So despite the mandates, lockdowns and protests, seems enough people still love Cindy and Labour....
Latest Comar Brunton Poll had her down several points, Labour down several points, but now needing the Greens to govern.

@taniwharugby politics of fear is very effective. And you can see by some posters even on here that some people gravitate towards an authoritarian government.

Once the perception of fear passes, people will reflect on how they have performed. The major problem is the opposition does not look like a serious alternative to govern right now. National need to sort their shit out ASAP

Interesting opinion piece from Karl du Fresne. He picks up the theme that I think we discussed that journalists (or those who choose to get actively involved in shaping the news) can become targets.

I wonder what would happen to death rates if we didn't have Westpac chopper, Ambo's and Surf Lifesavers? If people stopped giving to those charities?
Perhaps Mike needs to stop writing letter to the PM and start a massive charity campaign to get funds, like these other charities do.
If people really want to support it, it will fund itself. Otherwise it just isn't important enough to people
I don't really know why there is a still a charity funding helicopters but St John's have refused full funding of ambulances because they want some operational independence (and probably want to retain their main PR tool in obtaining donations). Not sure why it hasn't been centralised necessarily, but that might be more of a scrap than anyone has been interested in taking on.

@godder it should have been bought in under the same umbrella when they made the increases and changes to the fire service levies in 2017, along with taking the collection of them away from Insurers and adding to rego and rates...

Would have been a good time to look. Another good opportunity in the next few years with Health NZ replacing DHBs.

@godder because we want it to keep working properly?
Maybe, but part charges of $98 ration the care more than I'm personally comfortable with.
St John are also difficult employers to deal with, and suffer from the same issues most NGOs have with insecure funding.
All that would dissipate if they accepted full funding.

Looks around at what government control looks like, nah thanks.
I want ambulances to arrive in a timely manner.

Talk to someone who works for them. St John have a good reputation, but their internal culture was a bit average as I understand it

My father worked for then for 20 years, was key in computerising their systems (interesting stuff with fuzzy logic of placement of Ambulances before accidents occurred back when computers weren’t very powerful).

Other caucus colleagues reacted with surprise, when approached by the Herald. One said it was a "complete stitch-up" of Bridges by Collins.
The Herald understands there will be a press conference tomorrow at 10am with Collins, Deputy leader Shane Reti and the complainant. The complainant is still an MP.
Hmm ... Do I smell a manufactured controversy?
-
@tim Considering the Herald is now reporting that the slighted MP, Jacqui Dean, complained about it at the time five years ago and Bridges was spoken to by then-leader Bill English, then abso-fucking-lutely.
Jacqui is in the Class of 2005 alongside Judith and is very much a Collins fan.
I predict this will simply hasten the demise of Collins, and it will backfire badly on her.

Once/if the internal fighting has cleared who are the potential National leaders left standing? Seems to me from afar that Key and his lieutenants left a big hole?
Sorry, to add, is this an attempt to head off an internally predicted leadership battle?
