Blues 2022

@duluth I know he is young and has some growing to do, but when they were up here in pre-season I thought he looked small and not as effective (in that and the other small bits I had seen of him) as some of the other loosies.
Especially when comparing him to the likes of Ekuasi and Vikena.

@kiwimurph Bugger - now I've got to have conflicted loyalties on Segner.
Honestly, I had to check up on what position he played as the photo made him look like a halfback!
There is a congested loose forward set at the Blues ... hopefully he blossoms with us

@chris-b Signing Matera was hardly an endorsement for local loose forwards looking for an opportunity. I am sure that the MacDonald connection played a part, and as a young player you'd rather have a guaranteed contract now. Let's see how long the contract is for.

@nepia No mention in the article. I would hope not, as Auckland already has Choat, Gibson, Cam Church, and Niko Jones at 7.
Can't say I've heard of Cam Church. What about Harbour, how many 7s have they got floating around.

be good if the Blues nudged him further north if they were doing that, but the current model is supposed to avoid that isnt it.

Blues U20 and NZ U20 trialist, IIRC.
From his NZ Schools bio:
Cam Church led his Saint Kenitgern side to the National Co-ed title in 2019.
The hard-working flanker leads from the front with his efforts and is hoping to follow in the footsteps of his father who played three seasons for Counties Manukau in the 1990s. Itβs not only rugby in which Church has excelled, he has also competed to a national level in swimming and rowing.

I didn't mention you blokes only because he said he wanted to live in the big smoke.
-
@nepia well we are similar size to Nelson, just thier NPC team is a tad more successful....
More to the point if he (or others) is open to moving for NPC, this is where the Blues should be trying to ensure the talent is spread around the Blues region as best they can (ultimately players will go where they wanna go)
-
@taniwharugby There will also be players who don't want to live in two different cities throughout the year, and have to be in Auckland for the Blues season.
-
@tim oh for sure, I appreciate that, but if they are open to moving, then I would hope the Blues are suggesting the Blues region team with gaps where this person is...for example, an upcoming young lock coming to Northland is less likely to get alot of gametime when we have Goodhue, Caird and Hallam-Eames, all quality NPC players...plus Allan Craig a NZ secondary schools lock contracted as well.

A bit more detail.
Yeah - I wonder whether Segner was going to stay in the WTG at the Crusaders.
Sanders and Douglas going and Matera coming left a loose forward spot open - but, maybe Razor is giving it to someone else e.g. Liam Allen?

I wonder whether the Saders didn't think he was good enough ( @Chris ), or if there is a change in younger kids not wanting to have to wait so long in the Saders academy/B team before getting their chance.
I think he was not offered a full contract part time to cover Havilli,Who will miss part of SR.
There was some talk about Segner not nailing down a starting spot in the Ta$man side.
And drifting a bit during games, probably down to his age.
The Crusaders would have liked to keep him but maybe saw him as a year away from a full contract and the Blues offered him the contract,So he took it,You can't blame him to want to play sooner.
Probably had more chance getting game time at the Crusaders before the Blues were he will sit behind a few players but good luck to him.
