Hawkes Bay vs Tasman (RS)

Boom! Another Ranfurly Shield win. Only one more challenge to go this year.
Pretty hard and fast game, some controversial decisions (especially the non-yellow card for Parkinson and/or Tu'ungafasi), and the good guys won! The players will feel very sore after this game, but at least the Magpies will have a bonus point Shield win to ease the pain. Ta$man literally got nothing out of this game. Good times.
Mikaele-Tu'u was my MotM. He was awesome; miles better than Frizell & other Ta$man loosies. Also a good game from Flanders, Parsons & Cridge (two of the most underrated players in NZ), Enari, McClutchie, to name a few. Some great hits from Sapsford (although I always hold my breath when he tackles, because he has a tendency to tackle high).
Parkinson, Makalio and Renton were good for the Mako, as was Hunt's boot and Tavatavanawai.
Hope all the walking wounded are alright. Quinten Strange looked like he may have played his last game of the season.

Enjoyed watching that.
Kinda reluctant to ask this, and a strange question maybe, and NZers wouldn't have seen it because Sky went to ads, but after the game a bunch of HB guys (including Visinia) knelt and prayed in a circle.
Have no issue with that. Whatever spins your wheels.
But while they were doing that another bunch of guys from both teams (including Flanders and the HB 9) did the same thing.
Don't want to start an anti-religion debate (anyone grumbling about Sky Fairies gets deleted) but found that a little odd they didn't all join in together.
I assumed they're varying flavours of Christian (got visions of Protestants and Catholics but they didn't look Northern Irish), but maybe Christian and Muslim? Are the Tu'ungafasi's related?
Just interested in why the separate groups.

Sensational performance from Hawkes Bay, possibly their best performance in this shield era given the quality of the Ta$man team 5 tries to 1 is very comprehensive , Marino Mikaele Tu’u has something about him, totally outplayed frizzell who looks a shadow of the guy who has been running around in super rugby..
Was really impressed with Geoff Cridge as well, may have best game in a magpie jersey , and once again even though the word is Lincoln McClutchie has picked up a super contract with MP ,excuse my language , how the f..K has this kid never picked up a contract with NZ super team , its a disgrace ..In a beaten team Timoci Tavatavanawai gave an absolute clinic on how to catch a high ball today ..stats say he’s 1.87, 6’1 …some of them were next level , there’s some guys in a black jersey who could learn a few things about fielding high balls..😂..
There were times he was single handedly keeping Ta$man in the game ..
Wonder if he has been signed by any NZ super teams .? -

A sensational start by HB in this game. I thought that their loose forwards completely outplayed the Ta$man trio. Segner was anonymous in the 1st half.
I didn't think there was as much in the Tu'ungafasi/Dixon incident as Smith was trying to make us believe. A penalty was suffice and Hawke's Bay scored anyway. It did seem like there was a South African director in the Sky OBU when replays start being shown without any warning. Apikitoa got away with a no arms tackle to the legs later in the game which was equally as dangerous.

How is a no arms tackle to the legs as dangerous as to the shoulder/neck area?
I thought definite yellow, but we couldn't hear the TMO side of the convo. There weren't any real good angles, but it was clearly no arms, with very significant force, very close to the head. If they really want to come down hard on head contact, plays like that that run so much risk of a serious head contact should be dealt with fairly severely.

@booboo I saw that, but didn't think anything of it. Maybe one group started their prayer before the others could join and they didn't want to disturb them or wanted to start their own prayer from the beginning? I wouldn't read anything in it. The Tu'ungafasi's are brothers but of different flavours.

Did Gareth Evans get on the park at all?
-
@stockcar86 No, he didn't.
-
@stargazer Well rested for game against Canterbury then. Is Bryn Evans fit, to maybe give Parsons a rest?
-
@stockcar86 The commentators said at the beginning of the game that Bryn was injured, so not sure he'll be ready. But I wouldn't take what they say too seriously, because one of the commentators (not Izzy) also said that we had a full strength squad on the park. Clearly didn't have a clue who we're missing.

Thanks Gazer.
Was just one of those "What's going on here?" moments.

I am referring to players diving at the shins of attacking players when defending their line. The refs are usually strict on those because they are potentially leg-breakers.

And especially if diving shoulder first at the knees. That can be a career ender.

Yeah - I thought the Ta$man loose forward selection was a bit odd - and I think Strange getting injured actually helped us, by getting Renton on the field and a bit more mobility. I'm not sure why they thought they needed to play Cirikadaveta at 6 - we would have had plenty of lineout height with PPP, Strange, Frizell, Segner and Renton.
Final nail in the coffin, though, was Atu Moli hobbling off after his first scrum. That was the end of any change we might have got from our big pack wearing down HB.
Poor old Atu seems to be an absolute injury magnet. That will be the last we see of him this year unless I am very much mistaken. He might be just too big for his body?
-
@bovidae said in Hawkes Bay vs Ta$man (RS):
@chris-b Yep, you have got to feel for Moli. He was only on the field for a few minutes. I don't think the Chiefs will be relying on him either.
I can't upvote that.
He reminds me of Afeaki (another Chiefs TH) who looked like the future but has been killed by injuries.
