I know a lot about this fiasco and neither the Skpath Trust or WK come out of it looking very good I'm afraid.
I'm not surprised. Politics have been all of this thing from the start.
For the record I (& my brother) would really like a walking and cycling link across the harbour.
So do I! But not at $785M, when the cycling connections elsewhere are so crap.
Thanks - interesting post and comments

@nzzp Not helped by AT disbanding their cycling team. They haven't even managed to build everything promised under John Key's cycling programme - which they were given funding to do.
Unfortunately the NIMBY's in places like Mission Bay and West Lynn have also stymied progress but it seems like cycling infrastructure in Akl is either built as part of a motorway project for the visuals or consists of a white line near the kerb.

Unfortunate timing but I would guess this has been in the works for months.
Very idiotic to want the voting age lowered to 16.
I do like the idea of moving to four year terms, three is too short.

Having 18 yo I'd question if that is even old enough.

I was just saying the same to the wife.
I assume Labour think young dumb kids would vote for them?

They do. Young people break hard to the left. I sure as hell do, you are naive and idealistic, without much appreciation of how the real world works.
People often move past it; there's a reason old people vote for Winston and National

Is that the approved narrative Labour fanboys are using to convince themselves this is a good idea ? . Let’s see how you feel when National get back in power and start using this legislation to pork barrel wins in marginal seats .
I can't comment on current NZ politics, but I worked in the govt-run NZ Post Office in the 70-80's and the number of new telephone exchanges and infrastructure that we installed in marginal seats in election years was quite miraculous.
Pretty much the same thing happens in the UK with the centrally-run Health Service an new hospitals/health Centres

I'm sure they'll invite submissions, a bunch of people will rail against the youth of today, and one of the conclusions will be that there is no support for it.
It's nothing to do with the "youth of today". Sixteen year olds have always been stupid because they have not finished developing mentally and have little experience of life.
The Greens and, I assume, Labour appear to be trying to captitalise on that naivety. Shame on them.
Seymour also made a good point about having enough people voting that don't pay tax. It's a fair point.

It's nearly impossible to live in NZ and not to pay some tax, even if it's just GST. I'm sure there are a few people who live totally off grid without needing to buy electricity, fuel or food, but not many. If he's trying to talk about net taxpayers (as in people who receive more support from the government than they pay in tax e.g. working for families, beneficiaries, superannuitants, accommodation supplement), those calculations almost never include GST or excise/fuel taxes, and when they do, the number of net non-taxpayers plummets. If we consider all state support and subsidies over a lifetime (education, healthcare, super etc), most citizens born here break even across their whole life i.e. are not net taxpayers.
You personally have a considered opinion based on evidence and facts about the voting age, and should definitely make a submission. While I hold the same hope for the general populace, my flippant remark about the youth of today is based on my observations (anecdata as one might call it) of many of the arguments I have seen, which suggests to me at least that my hope there might be optimistic.

@jegga if someone isn’t fired over that it will be a disgrace
I stopped expecting competence or accountability from these people along time ago . I just wish they looked after the rest of us like they look after the gangs

@jegga while the optics are terrible I can actually see a point to getting a gang leader to tell gang members to get jabbed. As long as that's what he did and all he did.
The Panel on National Radio had a listener poll on lowering the voting age to 16 and apparently 60% were in favour.
I reckon they misheard and thought the moot was "should the voting age be changed to 60?"!

The chances of that being all he did are about the same as a one legged cat burying its turd in a frozen pond . He’s a gang member.
Anyone with teenage kids understands the insanity of giving 16 year olds the vote , it reminds me of the when we voted for out proportional representation system . The people that stood to gain the most like the greens were right behind it , unfortunately for them Winston Peters was ultimately the winner there. This is them trying again to tilt things in their favour because most of the country finds them so unpalatable

In an environment where peope are not allowed to see their relatives die in hospital, special treatment for criminals can go and get fucked.
I was being sarcastic when I branded them the Labour Mongrel Mob, now I have to wonder if I was on the money. Literally.

Its now two gang leaders not one. One of them was Harry Tam , after all as he says Jacinda Ardern trusts him why don't you?
People are getting so used to their excesses now that gang members killing someone with an axe on a towns main street barely occupies the news cycle any more.

@jegga So a 16 year old is old enough to decide who runs the country but not old enough to decide whether to drink alcohol or smoke / vape?
Not old enough to choose a tattoo but old enough to choose who runs the country.
Pathetic really cynical , they must be assuming that National won't continue to be a joke in two years and they'll need every vote they can get.
