So Isle of Wight festival was on over the weekend and they televised a lot of it. I caught some highlights in the evening and watched a couple of sets as well. Here is the Major Rage review of what I saw.
- Snow Patrol - full set. Really good best of hits set. Some great sing alongs and they do have quite the back catalogue. Was really impressed on the whole
- The Script - full set. Who the hell are these guys? I'd not heard of them at all. Front man is an ex boy-band so knows how to sing and put on a show. Songs are very very anthemic, if nothing new or exciting. Doubt will ever win any awards, but decent sort of watching and no doubt a great crowd to be a part of if they know the songs
- Duran Duran - erm, shithouse. I saw them 10 years ago and they were fucking great. Le Bon is just old now and unfortunately, can't really sing! Think he was having mega issues as was adjusting his ear piece a lot. Band was great, but Simon is just an old guy in tight pants now.
- Sophie Ellis Bextor - I've always thought she's seriously fucking hot so watched her for this. I wasn't disappointed, although she's hot in a mum sort of way these days. Really only has one song, so sung mainly covers plus that. Good eye candy for a middle aged bloke.
- David Guetta - I'm not really a raver, have had my time with that and do it enjoy it every now and again. But if I could pick one set to be at, it was his. Starts off with Titanium and all sorts of mixes and had an incredible light show. Crowd went nuts, it looked totally awesome.
- Maysie Peters - UK's answer to Bic Runga ... very talented young girl.
- Supergrass - Not listened to them in ages, and man I'd forgotten about how good they are! @MN5 I think you'd really enjoy them as the baselines behind the tracks are all over the show. Put on a great set, had the sundowner slot and I really enjoyed them. Drummer is like animal from sesame street. Man they can play fast.
- Sam Fender - not heard of this bloke, was ok, nothing new or interesting in my view
- Becky Hill - bit of Amy Winehouse / Joss Stone about her and I quite liked her set. Again, nothing revolutionary but enjoyed it.
So yeah, not there, but probably watched 4-5 hours of it.
(before people ask, yes things are open and I should be out 'n about on Fri/Sat evenings in the indian summer we are having here in September, but marathon in two weeks make Major Rage a very boring person)
fucking looove Sophie Ellis Bextor. Went out with a chick for a while for no other reason than she looked like her. Saw her the other day, she no longer does.
I saw Duran Duran when the bizarrely turned up on the bill of the V Festival some 14 years ago? (i went mainly for the Pumpkins and QoTSA) and they were okay then. Father Time is undefeated.

This is a great goth/minimal wave mix, though you may want to skip to 14:00 in if you want to avoid the industrial stuff.
Tears On The Wall by Twilight Ritual is such a banger. Great intro.

Saw her singing before she became uber-famous - about 1999? She was bloody great, sang a load of stuff from different genres and had a great range. She really impressed my ex, who was a semi-pro singer who knew her stuff on vocalists
Her Read my Lips album is really good.

Downloaded the Album El Mirage after hearing a snippet on a George Martin documentary.
Fuck it's good.

no one but @Tim is going to appreciate this but
i found an old documentary on Amazon about the birth of thrash metal. And pretty much since then i've just been listening to people play real fast
These dudes are as OG as it comes with Bay area Thrash bands. Kirk Hammett formed them, then fucked off to join Metallica and make a billion dollars.
Just relentless driving thrash guitar, shrieky vocals, squealing solo. it's got everything. Where is my cut-off denim jacket
-
Big 4 thrash, way more refined. Dave Lombardo is nearly my favourite drummer

According to analysis of Discog members' stated collections these are the 'most popular' albums of each decade since the 1950s.
These obviously aren't sales or popularity at the time but most collected/purchased over time listed by release date.50s Some Kind of Blue - Miles Davis
60s Sgt Peppers - Beatles
70s Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd
80s Thriller - Michael Jackson
90s Nevermind - Nirvana
00s Back to Black - Amy Winehouse
10s Random Access Memories - Daft PunkSome surprising results among each year but what doesn't surprise me, going by the posts from you lot of a 'certain age' is the period from late 80s through to mid 90s
86 - Metallica
87 - G&R
88 - Metallica
89 - Nirvana
90 - Depeche Mode (??)
91 - Nirvana
92 - RATM
93 - Nirvana
94 - NirvanaThat Cobain guy would be filthy rich if he had bothered to hang around (or maybe he wouldn't)
-
All that Nirvana shows how bad the early 1990s were. I bet most purchases were post-Cobain's death because, you know, it was cool and hip to have a copy of Nevermind in your collection. Metallica would be the same, as the popularity of the Black Album (released in 1991) would have got non-thrash fans to buy their earlier albums.
