and the Governments wonder why some people can't be fucked getting vaccinated. Even having been double jabbed for a couple of months now. And coming from a place with 2 cases in 14 months. I will still be in a hotel for 14 days if i want to go anywhere. And 14 days when i come home. Nothing in my life has changed. My risk profile hasn't changed.
All i am is a statistic adding up to a mythical figure where something might change later on. Maybe. Don't know what. Don't know when.

It's just getting silly now. We're not going to beat Covid with vaccinations alone, the population is going to need natural immunity as well. The government is going to have to accept that we have to let the virus run its course at some point.

I did a very un-Fern like thing and actually read what Hipkins said
"Do we think it's viable for a prolonged period of time to continue to restrict movement at the border to the, sort of, 4500 rooms’ worth of people in any given fortnight? I think the reality is it is not going to be viable to sustain that beyond the, sort of, immediate global response phase of Covid-19,” Hipkins said."
and
“We have elimination strategies for other infectious diseases, and we do that without necessarily needing to restrict movement at the border.”
I don't think it's as bleak as you guys are making out. I'm still hearing government talk about opening up at 80%. I definitely think the timeline has been pushed out and it could be a pretty bleak Xmas but I'm still hopeful.
-
Hipkins said that would not mean that the Government would simply keep managed isolation requirements in place forever, however.
“Do we think it's viable for a prolonged period of time to continue to restrict movement at the border to the, sort of, 4500 rooms’ worth of people in any given fortnight? I think the reality is it is not going to be viable to sustain that beyond the, sort of, immediate global response phase of Covid-19,” Hipkins said.
He said self-isolation would be part of that eventual change, but the wider elimination strategy would also have to change to respond to high levels of vaccination.
“We are going to have to think about alternatives to that. Things like self-isolation are part of the question. Things like the elimination strategy itself and how the elimination strategy evolves, first of all in New Zealand that has a high rate of vaccination... but also in a world that will increasingly become more highly vaccinated over the next year.”
I guess the devil is in the detail of where they see the "immediate global response phase" stopping and the "eventual change" starting.

@dogmeat don't be so flippant and dismissive, i've read it 3 times (the worst was before the edit when they first posted when it said gradual re-opening in 2023)
"opening up" given what he is talking about, what does that look like? Because it still looks a lot like 14 day quarantine for the immediate and not-so-immediate future. Who the fuck has the time to add 14 days to the start of a trip? At cost? That is a pretty significant barrier. Especially for a bloke with two pretty active boys who would hate it. And it's not like you can just book a spot. They gonna open more hotels?
Add in the Qld idiocy and it's 14 days on the way back as well.
Cheery picking the two most positive sounding parts to once again minimise how we are feeling doesn't really help things does it?

I would be HUGELY surprised if we get to 80%.
What if we only get to 77.5%, is that a fail?
“We have elimination strategies for other infectious diseases, and we do that without necessarily needing to restrict movement at the border.”
Also do that without Lockdowns.
-
@mariner4life Apologies for rattling your cage it was far from my intent. I feel for your predicament and that of everyone similarly affected. Certainly wasn't meaning to be flippant.
I chose the two quotes because they talk about MIQ not being a long term answer. There is plenty of noise from government sources over here that talks about the need to relax restrictions at the border.
Of course being politicians that's all it is plus the landscape can change very quickly as we have seen.
There is still broad support for a lockdown continuing in the short term - with a sizeable minority who seem happy to lock our border forever so govt pronouncements reflect that . However I expect that support will start to erode pretty quickly once we get to 70 and then 80% vaccinated. That's when the government will have to start having the hard discussion about trading freedoms for (effectively) lives.
Cindy doesn't like having those sorts of dialogues but she is ruled by the opinion polls. I don't think it'll help you guys this coming summer but I'M still hopeful we will open up Q2 22

@dogmeat John Campbell was giving Judith grief this morning when she mentioned 'acceptable deaths'
Thing is, that is a conversation that needs to be had, as @Kirwan said, we have >300 deaths on our roads every year, but people just get on with thier lives, if it isnt one of thier friends/family, it is largely just another statistic, similarly flu deaths, what 500 a year? Why is that acceptable, but not Covid deaths?
If we were 75% vaccinated, what does the modelling say in terms of expected deaths from covid?
0 might be ideal, but 0 is not achievable...unless you are ok with increased strain on mental health, unemployment, divorces etc thats without the fallout to other illnesses getting shunted down the queue, surgeries delayed/cancelled, people not being able to get to Dr in reasonable time, increased cost and delays on imported goods

I know lots of people that think isolation is the play but can't comprehend opening up as an option. But we need to face facts, at some point we have to try and live with it

@canefan yeah I have talked to some that still think like that, and TBF, this time last year was only about the time I had started coming round to the fact this virus aint going away...prior to that I was in the shut the border camp (although knew forever was never actually viable)
