Did it years ago with a mate. Good bit of fun, gives you a reason for the walk, and can be quite challenging. Kids love it

I guess you take the kids along to carry the solar charging unit for your GPS?
-

Fucken disastrous day today. Either stuff is too well hidden or someone has moved them and ruined it. 0 from 2......

Whichever way you look at it Geocaching officially "sux" now.....it's gonna be a tough road getting them out there again.

NTA you sound geeky enough to answer this, the first three we found were all tiny capsules. Are there other things to look for too ? I have a feeling perhaps it was right in front of us, we searched pretty thoroughly but are there things other than capsules to look for ?
-
Assume these are virtual things you find?
-

Well, I can't speak for your little country, but over here I've found them in such varied containers as vitamin bottles, lunchboxes, and an old ammo box.

Anything reasonably waterproof works well. People leave different things in there but I made a habit of leaving boot laces because they're practical. Some have travelling inhabitants like particular little toys that have made it halfway around the world.

The people who do this aren't sadists, but sometimes they get a little over-eager or a bit smart-arsed about it.

Like this fluffybunny:

Yeah we do geocaching. The kids love it especially my oldest. She's gifted and this really appeals to her.

We've only been doing it since Feb and clocked up our 50th find last week. That was our target before we hide any of our own and actually have 2 here ready to go and 1 out there now waiting for approval and publishing.

As to what you are looking for - all depends on the size they have it listed as in the app. Smallest are the micros which are kinda fingertip size then we seem to get a lot of eclipse mint tins and small systema containers as the next size up. Found a few lunch box size ones plus one that was actually like a big wooden chest.

I know that frustration at not being able to find one you are looking for. I spent about 30mins once trying to find one. Did my head in. Logged a DNF (did not find) then some prick logged a find on it the next day. Still not been back but I must!
-

Nope actual containers know as "caches". Then inside them is a log book and often random little items that you can swap or add to. Some also contain items called "trackables" which you need to log if you take them and then place them in another cache - these could be random little figures with tag's on the as ID or geocoins which is as you would expect a coin.
-

The cynic in me wonders if some bored young fuckwits have deliberately ruined it ( ie moved or taken it ) for those of us around Wellys south coast, has that happened to you guys ?
-

Yeah. The term they use is "muggled'. Happens a fair bit but you can check the activity on the app and see when that cache was last found. Usually some good hints on there too if you are really stuck.

It's amazing some of the places you find them and places you walk past all the time have caches hidden. We're all just unaware.
-

which app do you use, there are quite a few different ones.

-

I use the iphone one just called 'Geocaching'. The free membership is pretty good. Allows you to find any with 1.5 difficulty and 1.5 terrain rating or loss.

Premium one just upgrades you to access all caches, ie those higher rated plus also those people have set up as premium members only.

Some useful links

Watch and learn --> https://www.geocaching.com/guide/

NZ supplies. Not a lot but some stuff. --> http://www.cacheme.co.nz/

Works well if you like fitness and the outdoors as you can go on some pretty awesome missions and caches are usually placed in places people think you should go to see the view or something else special. You will go and find a lot of places you didnt know about before.
-

You can view the caches and logs etc on the NZ supplies on https://www.geocaching.com too. Much easier to view maps on there if planning an outing

Ughh got a note back this morning saying that cant publish my cache as someone had already submit one for review in that area!

Now have custom camo'd cache perfect for the location that will need to go somewhere else. Also have an angry 8 year old daughter!
-
