I'm actually surprised USA pay anything. Thought it was all pretty much college based

I think that's old thinking. I expect most of the athletes are pros now

Looking way ahead to Brisbane 2032, what's the chances we will see some form of cricket and netball? And possibly League, although that's highly unlikely.

It would be great if netball was added. But, I think any new sport added now has to be gender equal. So, it would have to come with men's netball. Which would probably reduce its chances to zero - as it isn't a particularly internationally deep/competitive sport even on the women's side. But is pretty much zero on the men's.

    Which is a shame.

In the real world netball is going to appeal as a potential path to about 95% more female athlete's than boxing and weight lifting. But, probably painted into a corner on this one.

That's so fucking stupid and is a great example of wokeness gone wrong. What bloke anywhere would begrudge the IOC adding Netball to the games? Why are the females getting done out of this opportunity?!!

Netball is played in how many nations? About 40? Probably only in Commonwealth nations? Is that enough to get accepted as an Olympic sport, especially as - as someone mentioned earlier in the thread, it's only played by women at representative level?

It also has a world cup, which is the pinnacle event, so why?

Yeah nothing to do with being woke. It's to do with it being a real minority sport that only came about because some Muppet couldn't read the rules of basketball!

i havent read the whole thread, have we talked about the Russian Olympic Committee? thoughts? does it undermine the ban to allow them to compete under a very slightly different name

Of course not. Commendable solution from the IOC to permit hard working athletes to compete and yet punish state sanctioned doping. No one reads or hears "Russian Olympic Committee" and thinks "Russia". Veeerry different.

I have no issue if its excluded for not being widely played enough - that's a perfectly acceptable way to assess something (though I would hope the guidelines are being applied consistently). My point is just that the "must be played by both genders" criteria is completely stupid and should be ditched

Some terrible and sad news here..

    https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/olympics/300378726/olympian-cyclist-olivia-podmores-family-mourn-her-sudden-death

I don't know what happens with NZ Cycling post selection processes so am not making judgement but would hope that when an athlete has put everything into their sport including meeting qualification but isn't selected there is a level of care to mitigate the mental impact.

Nah, that would have been her Alzheimer's kicking in. Always mixing me up with my brother.
This was while she was in your rest home right?
