@tim fair enough, i should add, very happy for it to stay in NZ if they can come up with a way to get more teams down here

I think that they would now. The proof of concept has been done and they want to stick with it in basic design. Didn't Bertarelli want to buy our first boat?

@snowy maybe, i wonder how much they can change the boats without pretty much paying for a new one, it was pretty clear the tw boats in the final were daylight ahead of the the others and there was a bit between them too...so what chance does anyone buying one of the old ones have?

Gets them closer to the cutting edge than starting from scratch

@canefan thats kind of my point...if we've made it so hard no one would bother starting from scratch...we're limiting those that will bother

San Fran was way worse, which is why things got scaled back. We didn't do that Ellison did.

Exclusive: Foiled? $100m America's Cup defence may be slipping from Auckland's grasp

    Fuck those guys.

The other thing was that the investment was supposed to be profitable over 2 events hosting, (assuming they won of course) so TNZ are effectively stealing tax payers and rate payers money. Very uncool.

I hadn't heard that last bit, that does change things quite a bit

It's even in the article Tim posted. Did you read it? Classic ferning if not.

After the Government and Auckland Council announced a $136m package to defend the America's Cup in 2018, both sides privately acknowledged that to get true value for money, Auckland needed to host at least two defences.

true, but ellison did his in san fran so he could attract all those american sponsors etc, thats what im saying radical/expensive design in an easy location or easy/cheap desing in NZ...but both might be a stretch, hense only three challengers

of course i didn't! and as i say, that does change things quite a bit, NZ definitely shouldn't be out of pocket

Well he just paid for it really for his own team anyway. There weren't many American sponsors that I recall (could be wrong). There were only 3 challengers in San Fran as well, unless I have forgotten someone. TNZ, Artemis, Luna Rossa.

We also reduced costs with lots of "standard" components and now that the boats are proven I would expect some others to join the party.

I'd go so far as to say that if they decide to get pissy and take it overseas, the government would be within it's right to give the 100m to a start-up team here, on the proviso that if they win, they have to host future events in NZ.

I doubt that will happen. It's the oldest sporting trophy in the world and attracts plenty of attention. I love it too, being a sailor, particularly the tech advances, etc. Foiling is the future so I reckon that they did the right thing with the design. Watching cats just drag race wasn't much fun. It did take a while for these things to get interesting too though.

@snowy maybe im just being paranoid, i just really noticed the last few events and how small the fields were compared to the ones i first start watching, 1987 with 13 challengers and 4 defenders...thats an event

Didn't we standardise some of the componetry? I think now the concept has been proven to work more might become interested

It was good. Yeah the decline started with cost, no doubt, and the billionaire backed teams. There were a lot of shit teams in '87 that had no chance of winning though, so the old quality versing quantity debate, that is being discussed for Super rugby too.

The 12m were only really interesting because even a poor design had a chance if they picked a shift as the boats were so slow. It was also pretty easy to just cover once you got in front, but the old rule is still true - the fastest boat will win the AC.

@canefan fingers crossed, might just be the vacuum of anyone sticking their hand up making me think the worst.

I'd be disappointed to ETNZ left the rate/tax payer out of pocket but i dont think it could bring myself to cheer for someone else

could be interesting if the government pulled ay funding and backed another NZ or pseudo NZ team, obviously a long shot but if ETNZ piss off enough people
