Genuine question... why did they ever change the laws to allow lifting?
It's always seemed to me that it just caused more problems than I can think of ever existing pre-lifting.

@kruse didnt the Saffas lift when in isolation and then when they re-entered the rugby world it was an innovation they adopted?

@taniwharugby Yes. Let's face it the lineouts used to be a free-for-all.

I remember the SA provincial teams using lifting in the lineouts on the 1992 SA tour before the test between the Boks and the ABs. It was like the teams were often playing different games.

@bovidae i reckon even watching U13 rugby with no lifting then u14 with lifting it looks much more organised.

I guess the one thing that would happen without lifting would bring back the spring heeled 90kg lock...

Bell and Gordon the standouts for the Tahs. After an initial good showing, Donaldson has faded under greater scrutiny from NZ teams.

Charlie Gamble had a great game too I thought - several excellent turnovers and some good tackling.

I reckon that of all the modern changes to the game, lineout lifting has improved the game immensely. The scrum the complete opposite.

To help speed up the game - one less thing to penalise.

    My AB hopes reignited.

Lifting will probably be removed eventually. Workplace health and safety issues.

similarly tackling, scrummaging, well, all contact, even touch can get dangerous with eye pokes, broken fingers!

Not sure we can even spectate 2 people playing it on video games, RSI!

You're just looking back with rose tinted glasses. Lineouts used to be an absolute shit fest. Scrappy forwards elbowing at each other to win rubbish ball for the halfback to deal with or get smashed by the opposing players.

Lifting in lineouts is the best change they ever made.

    Fair 'nuff
Like I said - honest question... I think a few people have said similar things - I'll bow to the masses.
Could the same effect have been achieved done other ways? Probably.
Doesn't matter... we are where we are, and it is better than before. Like so many things, I sometimes wonder if it could have been fixed by just proper application of the laws at the time.
