2016 World Sevens Series

Can't help playing without Mikkelsen and Dickson. That leaves only three on the bench after a huge semi final.
-
Tough gig for NZ that final. 10 players and double overtime semi.

Always felt Fiji were going to win that.

And we wew just too sloppy.

A TMO review of that last try woukd have been helpful. Big knock on by the Fijian close to the ruck as he stuck a hand out at the pass. Not visible in the end on replay but i rewound and my suspicions were confirmed.

But that's me clutching at straws. Fiji did more than enough to win that. -

Great game, Stannard tries a penalty kick after the siren and just misses - 14-12

Not sure why they went with the shot at goal. Just feels like a low percentage option in 7s.

Sure it was a stock standard 3 points in XVs, 30m out, 20m in from touch, LHS of the posts. But i felt the better option would have been to run it. -

France 34pts etc
-

The tears from the SA suppoters about the refereeing have reached a new level. I thought overall it was pretty inconsistent, but if anything I thought NZ got stiffed a bit - YC etc.

But the bit that got me, was Jonathan Kaplan has tweeted a few leading tweets suggesting that NZ do get favourable treatement. Now, thats interesting in that

1) It's come from an ex-referee

2) It's come from an ex-referee whose record refereeing a certain Australian team wsa 15-0.

I think he needs to tread very very carefully.
-

I don't think complaining about refereeing is ever edifying. Every nation has their moments with it.

Though I find Kaplan an interesting follow on Twitter, he does love a whinge. Would have thought an ex-ref may be a bit above that, but no.
-

He's South African, it's genetic

I"ve ditched him after yesterday. What he did with his rate the ref stuff was interesting, but recently he's just turned into a myopic jaapie fan.

Got enough of those in real-life to deal with, without adding more on twitter!
-

Awesome to see Fiji leading. Would love for them to win gold at the Olympics.

What's happening with the NZ women's team?

After looking like a very gold medal prospect, winning 3 from 3 world series in the last three years, they have yet to win a tournament this year with Australia winning all three instead.

Is there a legit concern that Australia has surpassed us or is this simply keeping our powder dry / experimentation. -

Australia does have a very good team and the NZ coach has been doing a fair bit of chopping and changing in the squad. One only hopes that he's experimenting.

If Australia loses Ellia Green, they'll come back to the pack in a big way.
-

Let's hope it simply is experimentation.

I struggle to believe that Australia has anything close to the depth of players available to it. Let's hope our girls are getting the resources necessary from the NZRU because a gold medal is a gold medal. Regardless of what gender wins it.
-

There were a few newbies and players returning from injury in the women's squad due to Kayla McAlister, Huriana Manuel and Gayle Broughton being injured. Honey Hirime wasn't in the squad either.

They need a top 3 place at the end of the Series to secure a favourable seeding for the Olympics. Hopefully, by then the injured players will all be available again.
-
They are Antonio Kiri Kiri, Josh van Leishout and Isaac Te Aute who fly to Singapore tonight.

Pita Ahki (shoulder), Sam Dickson (leg), Tim Mikkelson (ankle), and Lewis Ormond (foot) have been ruled out with injuries while DJ Forbes is also returning to New Zealand.

Forbes’ return is part of his long term conditioning plan to ensure he is in the best possible shape to be in contention for the New Zealand Olympic sevens team. At Hong Kong he equalled the World Series record for tournament appearances of 79.

The All Blacks Sevens took second place at Hong Kong after losing to Fiji in the final. New Zealand has been drawn in Pool B for the Singapore Sevens and will play USA, France and Canada.

The team remains second in the series, one point ahead of South Africa and five points behind leaders, Fiji, with three tournaments left in the season; Singapore, Paris and London.

Yes, Dylan Collier and Ted Stanaway.
-
Why is sherwin stowers not playing? Don't think he is injured. Just out of favour I'm guessing
