2021 Hawke's Bay club rugby

Full time:
Hastings 50 - 31 Central
Napier Tech 33 - 40 Clive
NOBM 28 - 21 Tamatea
MAC 17 - 37 TaradaleI watched most of the NOBM v Tamatea game and if it wasn't already clear from previous results, it was certainly clear from this game. Tamatea is a different beast, this year. They're a lot better than previous seasons. I can't imagine it's just the presence of Kereru-Symes and McClutchie, although they played well and look influential in the team.
Highlight of the game for me was an almost-try to Kereru-Symes. He was throwing the ball in a line-out to the first man in the line while everyone else jumped/lifted. That first man immediately threw it back to Kereru-Symes, who spotted a gap in the NOBM defence and went for a run. When he met the first defender, he opted for a grubber kick and kicked it well. If it wasn't for an unlucky bounce of the ball (going over the touch line), it would have been a certain (and brilliant) try. I love it when frontrowers think they are backs.
Both Kereru-Symes and McClutchie had good games, McC making a few good turnovers, seemingly inspired by watching Fakatava's jackals. He didn't kick for goal again, though.
Tamatea kept NOBM scoreless in the second half. The only reason for NOBM's win was a brief period at the end of the first half, in which Tamatea seemed to either getting tired or losing concentration, and conceded two tries. Tamatea had the lead for most of the first half. I think this game deserved a draw.

Went to Hastings - Central game, wanted to have a first look at Harry Godfrey.
Played first-five, looked a tidy player, just his first year out of school. Spent the first half just passing the ball, second half changed tactics and tried some chip kicks and took on the line three times.
He kicked three penalty goals and a conversion in their 31-50 loss. He only made two mistakes. One was a pass which missed everyone outside him, but his first was a halfway restart that went too long - over the deadball line - with the wind behind him. Scrum back on halfway. Central produced a great scrum and got a penalty, Godfrey kicked the penalty goal from halfway.
Hastings were too classy through, particularly in the backline. Toala played first-five and was in an argumentative mood with the AR's, needs to calm down or grow up.
Scrums have been a great weapon for Hastings RS so far this season, but Central were equal to them. Central got two scrum penalties. There was a great battle between Jason Long and Joel Hintz who opposed each other, call it even.
Mason Emerson did'nt play - he was tee runner again. Central scored their 4th try in the final minute to get a bonus point. Tom Parsons won a fair bit of ball in their lineout.

@higgins Found it. Rakete-Stones is on the Norths team list for their game against Petone.
Pirate could have used him. They've been terrible, this year.
Yes sorry, he's playing for my club!
Story goes that he insisted he would play for Norths, even though he was told he would play for some other club!
I also thought you guys may like to see some photos from HBHS (47) game v St Pats Stream (17) on Saturday, spread the word if you know anyone else that may be interested -

Let me guess. The other clubs he was told he had to play for would have been (in descending order) OBU, MSP, Petone followed by everyone else a huge distance behind those three..........................................

@chainsaw Any idea what the St Pats (S) standard is this year? Trying to gauge where HBHS form is sitting.
No idea sorry, first school game I've been to this year. Of course they're really only starting their season now.
@stargazer said in 2021 Hawke's Bay club rugby:
@chainsaw Thanks for that! Do you as a photographer at games have access to team sheets? This year, I haven't yet seen a single team sheet of Hastings Boys' and I'm keen to find out who's in the squad.
I could've asked at the time, but didn't sorry.

No idea again! Haven't talked to him yet, this info was from another party.

FT:
NOBM 24 - 36 Taradale
Central 18 - 14 MAC
Clive 7 - 47 Hastings
Tamatea 29 - 33 TechTaradale deserving winners against NOB Marist (sorry @Stockcar86) and took the Challenge Shield.
Taradale led all the way, three of their five tries went to number eight Iakapo Mapu. Taradale had a much bigger forward pack, their loosehead prop Wiremu Cottrell (15 games for Wanganui) was as tall as Taradale's locking pair and blindside flanker Josh Eden-Whaitiri.
Central's 18 points against MAC was all made up of three pointers, presumably by Harry Godfrey. I wonder if there was a drop goal or two in there?
