Pirates and Havelock North miss out on playing in the Maddison Trophy.
Apparently Hurricanes Under 20 Harry Godfrey was the star for Central in their 32-29 win over Havelock North, kicking 22 points including an injury time penalty goal for the win.
Watched Tech OB v Tamatea. Tech OB won the first half 23-5, but lost the second half 19-26 for the 42-31 win.
For Tamatea Lincoln McClutchie didn't do any goalkicking and Kianu Kereru-Symes didn't do any of the throwing in to the lineout.

@number-10 Did Godfrey play at 10 or 15?
Watching the Hurricanes U20s, I was really impressed with his attacking prowess. Huge workrate, always at the right place at the right time, sparking a lot of the junior Canes' attacks. Riley Higgins got too much credit; personally I think most of that should have gone to Godfrey, who created most of the opportunities.
If it was up to me, I'd give him Baker's spot in the Magpies squad.
I think it may also be time for Tiaki Fabish; I'd like him to take the spot of Elijah Martin, who was squad filler anyway. I may go to an OBU game in one of the next weekends, to watch him play and to see how he goes.
If anyone of you can make it to a Hastings' game, I hope you can have a close look at Thompson-Dunn, too. I'd love to know whether he's ready for the step up, or whether he needs another year in the Saracens' squad. He could take Anzelo Tuitavuki's spot.
By the way, is Sam McNicol still playing? Didn't see him in the NOBM line-up.
Edit: @Higgins, I see that OBU plays Wellington Axemen, next weekend. If you're going to that game, can you have a good look at how Fabish is going?

@stargazer No reason why I can't be there at this stage. Having said that I often don't get to see too much play if there are too many peripheral off field and sundry other things to deal to. Usually manage to view most of the second half of games but the encounter should be well over as a contest by that stage. My guys came out of yesterday's game with about six injuries (including two front rowers with broken bones) making upward of ten likely to be unavailable to play OBU. A late call up for Higgins however is extremely unlikey!!!!!!

Havelock North 29 - 32 Central
Napier Tech 42 - 31 Tamatea
Taradale 15 - 25 Hastings R&SAt last something to be cherry about

@stargazer after watching most of those Under 20 games properly all three of Morgan, Godfrey and Higgins had moments of brilliance mixed in with moments that they would much rather forget. I hope they are all on the Canes radar though because they did look very good when they got things right. Godfrey was deadly from the back. Shame we didn’t get to see Roderick Solo in action, he’s another from that young group that I hope we see more of during the NPC.
On Fabish, how big is he? I hope he isn’t another loose forward that can play lock. The Canes need proper locks that are around 2m.

The other thing from the Tech v Tamatea match.
Tim Farrell, did not play, as he has stuffed his shoulder again, out for the rest of the year.
Might call it quits.

Going by the writeup in the HB Today he was at 10.

Nash Cup - Sat 1 May 2021:
MAC v NOBM
HRS v Clive
Central v Napier Tech
Taradale v Havelock North
Tamatea v PirateThis is from the article about this weekend's club games on Hawke's Bay App:
Available again for the Central sub union's Bebbington Shield team if required, Slingsby, pointed out he wasn't a fan of the Bay's premier club competition format this season which will see Havelock North and Napier Pirate Rugby and Sports miss out on Maddison Trophy play.
"Havelock North have won more premier trophies than most clubs. Yet they may lose a lot of players who don't want to play second division. Teams will be a lot different in the second round than the first ... we will be when we have everyone back on board."
"The Hawke's Bay union sent out a survey but obviously didn't take notice of the response. It would be good if they came and spoke with the players and not club committee members," Slingsby said.
"Rugby is a dying sport. The sports which are growing are the ones which are played during the week. Rugby has to move with the times. It's time for more Friday night games so players can spend more Saturdays with their wives and kids," Slingsby added.
I've had my doubts about the new format from the start, but if clubs like Havelock North and Pirates are going to lose players to other clubs because of relegation, this new format may have dire consequences. As to more Friday night games: how many premier players are fathers who prefer to spend their Saturdays with their family? Or is this just the opinion of an older player?

@higgins He plays for Havelock North.
Does he actually? There's no Southern Cross Hospitals in HB are there?
-
@stargazer Bloody Havelock supporting a player who plays for the evil Southlanders. I herby withdraw all my support for them and renounce the fact I once played for them.
Also, why would we be wondering if he wasn't playing when he was playing 4 days ago?
-
@nepia I knew he was playing for them; you were the one wondering .
And, thus far, I haven't seen any media release from Southland that he has re-signed with them (his previous contract has expired), so that means he doesn't have to play there. He has a regular job and lives in Hawke's Bay.
Having said that, unless MMT and Gareth Evans haven't recoved from their injuries in time for the NPC, and/or the ABs pick up Flanders, and/or we lose more loosies, I'm not interested in Lamborn returning to the Magpies, no matter how well he played for the Stags. I'd rather see a return from Hugh Renton, but I don't think that will happen.
