UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has accused the 12 clubs behind a proposed European Super League (ESL) of "spitting in the face of football lovers" and slammed the "snakes" at its centre, as he dismissed the plan to launch a rival to the Champions League as "disgraceful and self-serving." Ceferin, who has overseen the remodelling of the Champions League from 32 teams to 36, starting in 2024-25, spoke publicly for the first time since the ESL unveiled their blueprint for a new competition Sunday. The initiative has been condemned by fans, football organisations and national leaders, with UEFA and FIFA strongly opposed to the attempt of the game's biggest clubs to form their own league. Speaking during a Zoom media conference in Switzerland, Ceferin condemned Juventus chairman Andrea Agnelli and Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, who helped organise the ESL and resigned from their roles in the European Club Association, the body that brings together 246 major clubs. "I cannot stress more strongly at the moment that UEFA and the football world stand together alongside this disgraceful, self-serving project from a select few clubs in Europe fuelled by greed above all else," Ceferin said. "This idea is a spit in the face of all football lovers and our society as well. We must not let them take [football] away from us. I have seen many things in my life, I was a criminal lawyer for 24 years. I've seen many people. I've never seen anyone like that. "If I start with Ed Woodward, but he called me last Thursday, saying that he's very satisfied with reforms and he fully supports them. Obviously he already signed something else. "[Agnelli is] probably the biggest disappointment of all. I don't want to be too personal, but I have never seen a person who lied so many times as persistently as he did. I spoke to him on Saturday and he said these were only rumours, nothing going on. Then he turned off the phone. Greediness is so strong that all the human values evaporate. It's always good to know in life, who is who." Ceferin confirmed that any players who played in the ESL would be banned from participating in future international tournaments, including the World Cup. "The players who will play in teams that might play in the closed league will be banned from playing in World Cup and Euros," Ceferin said. "They could not represent national team in any matches." "We didn't know we had snakes working close to us, but now we know," Ceferin added. "Super League is only about money, money of the dozen, I don't want to call them dirty dozen, but UEFA is about developing football, and about financing what should be financed, that our football, our culture survives, and some people don't understand it. "We have the English FA, Spanish Federation, Italian Federation, the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A and FIFA, unanimous in opposition to these cynical plans which are completely against what football should be. We are all united against this nonsense of a project."

@junior wow. Although I shouldn't be surprised given the money spent and results.
Of course the timing is a bit shit a week out of a cup final.
Timing is perfect - more chance of winning it with Jose gone and much harder to sack him if they did fluke a win with him in charge.
The Jose reign at Spurs went pretty much to plan - except he didn't have any initial success. Surely no other English club will take him on.

I agree. The team had checked out weeks ago. We simply aren't built to park the bus, the interim coaches will do well to let the attacking players do what they are good at. This way we are a slim chance, as opposed to basically no chance

This looks real. And if it is, then they may as well call the season. No one is catching City. The relegation battle is done (sorry @dogmeat but you know it's true) and the European spots no longer mean anything
The decision on this years Champs league should be interesting. If they get kicked out does the trophy then go to PSG? And what happens when PSG sign on?
This breakaway has a chance to work you know. A billion Asian fans won't give a shit about why they are watching Man U play Real all the time, they'll still watch.

They just need to get a viable product off the ground and then it will be a matter of time before UEFA and the FAs have to deal

@mariner4life i honestly think it will depending on how pissed of the local fans are
there are alot of these overseas fans thats "support" these teams because "everyone else" does, they play in front of packed stadiums, when theyre allowed too...if those stadiums aren't packed and there is the impression these teams arent "cool" anymore....how long will those billion overseas fans watch....will the next wave of tallent want to play for these break away teams? some obviously will play for whoever pays them the most...but not all

Look at global merchandise sales and work out how this will go

There is meant to be an EPL meeting between the other 14 clubs tomorrow. It is expected that they will agree that the "big 6" will have to leave the EPL at the end of the season. That's 19 less home games to generate revenue for those clubs. Who is going to blink first?
Leicester City to win the EPL again!

@kiwiwomble said in EPL 2020/2021:
@canefan yeah, but those global mech sales started with these teams being the popular ones to follow, not everyone buying those shirts are hard out fans watching every game etc
Those teams are popular because of one thing. Success. I don't remember people wearing Chelsea jerseys in my childhood, until Roman bought them and they won lots. ManU were set during the Busby years and were enhanced by the class of 92. Real Madrid and Barca, enough said. Same goes for Juve and the Milan teams. Liverpool were the biggest team of the 1980s and have won stuff lately. Arsenal were one of the teams of the 90s. Spurs are the lucky ones, having not won big since the 60s

@bovidae No relegation in 2021.
If UEFA and FIFA don't blink then the breakaway clubs have a problem.
Sure the American owners have a hard on for the NBA model but the NBA is the pinnacle of that sport. For football that is still the international game. Is Kane really going to abandon England and the World Cup for a few more million he doesn't really need?
Thank God footballs governing bodies are squeaky clean and always act in the best interests of the game....
TV is the key. Has the breakaway comp got a TV deal. How much will the various national leagues have to give back to broadcasters if 'the big 12' aren't participating?

Interestingly the general consensus among Spurs supporters on online blogs (can only assume most club supporters agree) I read don't see international football as the pinnacle, in fact they see it as a nuisance that gets in the way of club competition. Of course that might change in England if they ever manage to win a major international tournament...

I'm not sure that's true. There is still the romantic side of representing your country, but i get the impression for the fans and the vast majority of players, Club comes first.

@mariner4life In typical Fern fashion, I agree but I don't agree.
I think fans hate the friendlies and don't get excited by qualifying tournaments because England have consistently achieved at that level for a couple of decades. But when the actual tournaments come round. ING-GA-LUND!!!
Even if they're shite. What I enjoy about football is the tribalism of its supporters. When a big international tournament comes around that gets replaced by nationalism. For most of the players too.

romantic. Bit in the age of 350-odd thousand quid a week, not sure it still holds water. But then i can't prove it so i'll leave it.
i am actually really interested in how this plays out now. who blinks? have these clubs burned to many bridges? or are UEAFA and the FAs too tied to the broadcast money they provide?

whats tottenham won? they're 100% just a "cool" club to follow
in general you're right...but that success you talk about was spread over several comps, EPL, FA Cup, league cup, community shield, champions league, Europa League....how long can they live on the legacy of success if they were to be excluded from some or all of those and only be competing for one
