Fatbastarding: NTA log
We took his stitches out last night - while on holiday in Adelaide he took the back of his rather large noggin out on the coffee table in our apartment. 4 stitches, much grief. Once he was sewn up he was fine!

Ouch!

Your lucky he didnt connect with the front of his head, you and your Mrs would be attracting a few not so nice stares then!

As a kid i was forever getting bumps and bruises on my head, everyone would think i was getting smacked around by my parents! -
Brief update - both grades won on the weekend while I was flying in from Adelaide. The game was moved from our ground to theirs (softcock council shut our grounds) and so we only had 26 blokes to run two sides. Most of 2nd grade backed up (bar about three) and after some early pressure both sides came through well.

Firsts 48-13 with our LHP nabbing 2 meat pies (and nearly a third by all reports)
Seconds 35-15 and for the second time we had our 18yo propping at tighthead and his dad at rake <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

This weekend its the big one: Bankstown. Need to beat the bastards to get out of their sights on the Shield table, though second grade won't catch them even with a bonus point. Will be different come finals time... -
Played first half for second grade today (second row again <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />), and we got a bit of a touch-up from Bankstown to the tune of 29-8. As a team, we did all the basics wrong - tackling too high, rushing out of the line, letting their Islander boys play basketball rugby just the way they want. No real structure in attack from us. Down 19-3 shortly after the break, we hit back with a try to make it 19-8 and then, having all the momentum, it got turned when the regular ref left the field and an old fat bloke took over. He missed a massive knock-on by the opposition and they ran away to score. They also kicked a penalty for the final result. They worked the blindside really well and just ran big lads at us. We tried to play them at their own game when we should have used better discipline to play for field position and grind out the win. They're now well clear of us at the top of the table.

Firsts had a hard game and won with a last-minute try 20-15. Thank fuck - they should have drilled those guys and its a definite wakeup call. We're now leading the Club Championship by 28 points and should stay that way unless we stumble, and by fuck we better not.

Training is back to two nights per week as we run into the second half of the season.

On a personal note, I touched the ball only a couple of times in the rucks, and yet again made no tackles - their blokes offloaded quite a farken bit and weren't very good at ruck time besides. They just spread it, ran through our arm tackles and left us for dead. Gotta fix that... My one opportunity for glory came at lineout time - they missed it and it dropped to me standing at 3 - I put it through the tips of my fingers. Might have been a good thing actually as there were several large opposition lads ready to smash fucker out of me :nta

Also, I've noticed the last couple of weeks that my left Achilles is on strike - sort of. If I stand on the ball of my right foot I can lift my heel well off the ground, but not with my left. Might be time to see the physio, but the next five weeks are all games either at home or at an opponent just up the road, so any recommendations to lay off might just fall by the wayside <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' /> [edit]Just realised I probably won't be playing one of those games anyway, as their second grade side dropped out of the comp... :nta -
Reviewed some footage of yesterday's 2nd grade game. A bit like Wallabies v All Blacks of the last three years really - they lived off our mistakes (and one glaring error by the ref <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />). If we tighten it up and use the 2 channel ball to wear their guys out, including use of two quick scavengers, I reckon we could roll those blokes come finals time.... That's another two months away though, so got to concentrate on the blokes immediately behind us whom we play this weekend.
-
Yesterday I just pulled out a few chinups and dips as my right shoulder was a bit stiff from binding at TH lock. The guy at prop didn't have a lot of spare jumper to bind on <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> Gotta do some more grip strength work there I guess, but these new silky jumpers aren't the easiest things to hang onto when stretched across a large man...

The chinups are getting slightly easier and I can usually get a full one out without a problem. Once I get that happening more easily, it'll be time to move the arms from the "hammer" position to supine. Once I can punch out a few of those, time to go for the full pullup in the overhand grip.

Not much to report in terms of other injuries - bit of back soreness and the calves are tight because I've been off my magnesium for a while. -
Saw the physio this arv - he's pretty concerned with my ankle and if it doesn't improve in the short term he's going to recommend a bunch of nerve testing via a specialist. Basically he said "You get to know injuries and learn to find the solutions pretty quickly. Every now and then something comes along that gets your attention because it doesn't look the way it should. You have one of these." <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

This was after trying to do some muscle releases on the inside of my shin that were pure fricking agony. In any case, he's strapped it up and recommended I come back Friday. Hasn't banned me from training or playing though, so I reckon he's not lying about it being a nerve issue - just a structural thing... -
or NOT a structural thing...

Anyways, I'm bloody tired at the moment due to lack of sleep, but decided to brave the cold and punch out a few exercises on the tower:

1 full chinup
2 full dips
15 hanging knee raise

1.5 full chins
2 full dips
10 hanging knee raise

1 half chin + 1 full reverse
3 full dips

Just to keep the muscles burning. Pretty happy that I'm up to my goal of 1 chinup but obviously putting it all together with the circuit, when use of other muscles tires me out, is the big thing. -
Forgot to add the 10 pushups I did last night. Oh well.

Team training tonight, but thanks to Sydney's fucking idiot rail network*** I got there a bit late. Still, had time for a run around on defense/handling drills for half an hour. When I got home I cracked out:

1.5 chins
4 dips
12 knee raises

1 chin
2 dips
10 knee raises

and 10 x 3 pushups.

*** The wires broke on the north shore line in high wind today (Harbour Bridge - the downside of overhead cables for electric networks as opposed to electrified rails) and because the north shore line actually runs out to the west, all my trains were fucked up by it. Reorganise the fucking thing already. Useless cocks. -

heard about this on the news last night and thought you might be struggling Nick. Amazing how one relatively minor incident can completely fuck up the entire city's commuting <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Good work on the additional stuff you are doing over and above your footy training. I can remember very well how inclined one can be to just flop down and relax after footy training. :shifty: -
Yep - the way the current lines are connected, the people in the northern suburbs depend on the trains from the far western suburbs to run on time, and vice-versa. A mate of mine who is a bit of a train spotter reckons they could fix it tomorrow with a few clever timetable changes, but they're so scared of people who don't like to change trains they're going to bring it in gradually. Fuck 'em I say. If they want to drive and clog the roads, then it means my train runs even MORE efficiently. And I'll happily change trains at Central every day if need be.

Thanks. I know exactly what you mean. <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' /> But especially with the chinups, I'm finding the more I do the better I get. It would be easy for me to just "peak" at one chinup and leave it there, but I'm now aiming for 2, then 3, then 5. Once that happens I'm going for pullups as well to work the lats. The dips I'm getting the hang of just by using sheer willpower to get my fat arse back up to the top of each rep, despite the pain in my wrists and the feeling my head will pop clean off my shoulders <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' /> With the pushups and occasional shoulder press, I'm getting all-over chest and arms workout, concentrating on locking core muscles for all of them. Not losing much weight but its all good strength...

Saw the physio again today. Not too much in the way of recovery so far, but he's strapped up the foot for tomorrow's game after doing some muscle release (ow ow fucking ow) and a little bit of acupuncture to try and see what the nerves are up to... It stood up well at training and this is the weirdest thing - I'm not in pain, I can still run about as fast as I was capable of (ie. not very <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />) and it doesn't pull up sore. :nta Depending on how it goes on the weekend, I'll probably be seeing a medico about all this.

Today:
Chest: 126cm
Gut: 115cm
Butt: 122cm
Latest measurements (from memory):

Chest 125cm
Gut 113cm
Butt 120cm

:nta Given I'm not currently fulfilling my whole schedule, I don't suppose this is too bad.

[edit] Ripped myself off by 3cm on the butt measurement  120 instead of 123. Yeah its not much to you skinny people, but I like it when I'm wrong in the right direction <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' /> -
Haven't managed to get onto TSF from home the last few days :nta Might have to adjust my timeout settings...

On Saturday, played 20 minutes of the second half for 2nd Grade (second row again). We fucking lost again - 17-0 this time, and the first time we've been held scoreless. Really pissed off as it was there for the taking but a few stupid pushed passes and two defensive lapses. Ref was a total fucking clown for both sides and breakdowns a real lottery - he also called a forward pass against them that was a try for all money. I was very pissed off standing on the sidelines, watching us faff around with the ball instead of playing straight-ahead rugby against the oppo.

e.g. we got a penalty under the posts at the end of the first half (penalty try IMHO <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />), and were down 7-0 at that stage. Rather than take the three and build some momentum, our scrumhalf decided to go for a tap. Not sure if the skipper (also a back) advised him to do it or what. Anyways, the resulting flick-pass out of the next tackle fucked the whole thing. The other (better) option was a scrum and let our 8th man bash his way over (he made about 6 line breaks already and was primed for a try).

The oval we played at is bounded on two sides by a drainage creek, and the FluffyBunnys knew it. When they hit the lead, they kicked every ball into the creek so as to wind down the clock - regulations state they should have had two other balls at the ready, but they fucking didn't. It shouldn't have even been part of the equation really - we didn't deserve to win but by fuck I've never seen us play that badly ever. Copping a yellow and then red card to our reserve flyhalf didn't help, but he was being a bit of a dick.

Took out my frustration late in the game by effecting an unorthodox tackle on a bloke running past me - first tackle I can remember making this season - generally I'm too slow to grab anyone <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />. Obviously those grip bars and chinups are doing the trick with my hand strength, as I only managed to grab his shirt, but held on by both hands, then used my superior body weight as the fulcrum to slam him into the deck back toward his own tryline. Farken hard ground that, too - when I soaked my headgear that evening the water was a nice shade of mud from all the dust I picked up <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' /> The next major event for me was assisting the other lock in absolutely belting one of their flankers in the tackle. Besides that, some lineout lifting, and covering up at the rucks. No running with the ball which was a shame - a couple of the oppo looked a bit soft and worthy of being run over.

First grade won with a bonus point, but now we're only 12 points ahead on the Championship table (Firsts = 30 per win, Seconds = 16). Second grade have no game this weekend due to the opposing club withdrawing their 2nd grade team, but I'll still show up to support Firsts. Not much hope of getting a run unless they're desperately short <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

I've decided I should stick my hand up for tighthead prop, as the bloke currently in the job is probably less fit than I am (shocking though that may seem). He's been copping a hammering once his initial enthusiasm wears off, and his technique is shoddy to say the least. It'll hurt a bit to start, but I reckon I can contribute better there than being the shortest second rower in the world. :nta -
I rushed home for training only to get an SMS 4 minutes before it started that the Council had closed the grounds. Dammit.

So as it was an hour until dinner, I decided to crack out a bit of strength work:

2 chinups (no hang)
20 Knee Raise
12 mod pullups
20 situps
4 dips
10 pushups
20 shoulder press
20 bent flyes

1 chinup + 10sec hang
12 knee raise
10 mod pullups
20 situps (just!)
4 dips
8 pushups
20 shoulder press
20 bent flyes

And just to finish off, did 2 reverse full pullups - though the second one seems to have tweaked my left elbow a bit.

Tomorrow night its some fitness training. -
Training tonight. Not as cold as it has been, but the grounds were pretty wet - the local junior soccer players are going to hate us for chopping up the goal square <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />

Got involved but still not picked for the First XV this weekend <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> No surprises. Heaps of better guys at the club. I'll be doing more video work in any case, and at least this time I'll get the whole game on tape (must remember to buy more DV tape).

Generally stuffed when I got home. Protein shake, dinner, water. Story time with Little Aussie now. -
Body is doing OK, though I rarely get more than half a game <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> Working on my strength has definitely helped.

I played one half against Bankstown down at Canley Vale. They tended to move the ball away from the forwards as their big Islander backline wasn't easily tackled - helps if you go for the hips but that is in the past now and hopefully the boys learned something. We were undisciplined and didn't stick to our strengths. Replacement ref didn't help but that shouldn't have been a factor. Had it all over them in the scrum and at times in the lineout.

Similarly to Oakhill, we should play it through the pack and beat them into submission before giving it to the blouses.

First Grade had a big win (66-5) over Rockdale on Saturday. Their Second Grade have withdrawn from the comp so I wasn't needed. We're 12 points ahead of Bankstown on the Championship so its all wins from here, because no-one looks like turning them over, unless Oakhill can do it in early August.... -
I'm glad you worked it out after one game as at my old club our coaches hadn't worked it out after 3 years. They love to play it in the backs and there forwards were all Nathan Sharpe clones. Every time we played tight we had it all over them but our coaches wanted us to spread the ball wide and play their game. (sorry digressing)

Glad your still enjoying it and hope the Renegades continue to grow and prosper and surge up the divisions to give the yuppies in Div 1 a run for their money! -
Mate, we already play against Colleagues Convicts i.e. the Woollahra Gay rep team <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' /> Could you get any more yuppified? They're training up for the Bingham Cup - think they got some silverware there last year but it might have been the Plate comp.

Training tonight - innit funny how big injuries you can deal with, but the little annoying ones just piss you off? Made the mistake of cutting my fingernails this afternoon and at training I've ripped two of them. Some fat bastard stood on my ankle, and I pushed through that, but the nails for some reason just won't shut up <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> I should put bandaids on but it affects my typing <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Tonight we started with ruck drills. Got my teeth rattled holding the bag by one of the second grade props. He got up with a grin and I told him he hits like a fag. Next time I knew he'd go high so I dropped a bit lower and hit him from the side as he was into his wind-up After that it was lineouts, scrums, and a 15 minute run-through of some set moves and a bit of general play. Good thing I took along my new Gilbert because the balls they brought to practice were shit. Didn't stick around to do some kicking practice as it was late, but I did a couple of short restarts and managed to get fairly good distance (not accuracy <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />) on a dropgoal from 30m out 5m to the left of the uprights. Those Gilbert balls are the shit, no matter which one you use. So sweet.... ahem

Looking forward to this weekend actually as I haven't had a decent run in a couple of weeks. We're up against 5th (of Norwest in 2nd Grade who are 6-0-6 for the season. We gave them a touch-up last time but they've had a couple of away wins in a row against the teams in 6th and 7th so I say keep it simple and we'll win. Bash shit out of them and hope all our blokes turn up. Never realised there were so many coppers in the club - 2nd Grade captain (outside centre) is a D, 2nd grade coach recently got promoted to Inspector, and the Club President (Fijian Test player) is a Fed! Bloody hell!
