A good example why the "live posts" potential rule has legs. About 4 minutes held up with a video review to see if the ball shaved the post. AFL VAR decisions are basically 2 dimensional minutae seeking to see a flick of a finger or a shave of a post - basically like those dubious " did it carry" slip catches in cricket.
Having live posts doesn't waste 4 minutes, reduces the need for VAR ( surely a good thing), is not open to an umpires interpretation, removes any doubt, provides a visual and visceral verdict for fans and gives a heartstopping gulp moment for fans as they process the ricochet, ( especially when the ball bounces back infield)
No negatives except for breaking tradition as far as I can see.

Great game last night, but pretty gutting for Carlton. Another case of so close but so far, they loomed up a few times but just couldn't get it done. Patrick Cripps went MIA, and the other on-ballers were below their best.
They aren't a bad side, but I think their hopes of making the eight are fading even at this early stage. Those are the sort of games that good teams need to step up and win. Collingwood are still a good team.

I'm wondering of the new rules, and the subsequent decrease in stoppages, is having an effect on the contested ball beasts? Lachie Neale did fuck all last week. Cripps hasn't done much to start. Perhaps this slight tweak to game style has left these boys with a bit of work to do than just smashing in to stoppages and getting the ball out?

Maybe. Probably too early to tell. But Cripps isn't even winning much ball. He dropped a sitter of a chest mark in front of goal. He slipped over with the ball a bunch of times. Chalk it up to a bad night at the office, but in a contract year he needs to show more if he wants to command the type of salary commensurate with other Brownlow contenders.

@barbarian I'm just reading and AFL forum and the Carlton pile-on is enormous, most especially from their own fans.
Someone laid out their record over the past 15 years and it is appalling. But because they were big in the 80s and 90s, they are still a destination club, and they still get the media talking them up, and they still get so many primetime games.
I think Carlton are the only club where i haven't seen a good team from them.
-
@mariner4life Yeah the pile-on is immense, but it is decades in the making.
I am a recent convert to Carlton via marriage, and I looked at last night and thought 'we played OK, would have liked to have won but Collingwood played really well'.
Our new recruits look really good, there is plenty to like about our game when we get moving. If we end up 9th or 10th I won't be too disappointed. But there's a large part of the fanbase who demand finals and demand them now. And I see why. It's win or bust, especially against Collingwood.
But if we roll over Fremantle next week, we're 1-2 and the season is far from dead.
-
Who buys an esssendon player and expects them to be good?
-
The whistle in the last 5 minutes of this game was a fucking joke.
-
Dees now 2-0. Not completely convincing in either game and last night we kicked far, far too many behinds and let the Saints off the hook. KMG again to the fore and man I love our midfield. Hopefully when Weiderman comes back we get more accurate in front of goal. Pickett is a spark and I think if we stay reasonably healthy we can make a really good run at it this year.
-
Sydney good again
Great to see gold Coast do to North what they should
The dons are nothing. The roos are nailed on for the spoon.
Melbourne look like they will actually achieve and finish 6-8th
-
Damn it...getting excited about the bloods, another +100 points, buddy back and scoring, MacDonald and gulden back up with more goals

I'll go so far as to suggest we can make the top four.
Gawn, Jones, Oliver, Petracca, Neale-Bullen, May, Viney, Pickett, Brayshaw, Fritsch, Harmes, Salem, Weiderman, MacDonald all healthy makes a bloody competitive unit.
gulp

We played a weird game last night. Quite different to the GWS game last week. But Dees created many scoring opportunities and we simply didn’t get the run off half-back.
-
Doggies v West Coast was excellent. At one point it looked like WC running away with it, but great Doggies come back, and held their nerve for a tight win. Both sides look bloody good.
And Freo got a win. GWS look like they are out the back door.
Two games in and there will be alarm bells at a few clubs.
-
@mariner4life Leon Cameron won't get past round six. GWS made what I think is a pretty average Freo side look like world beaters.
Went to the SCG to watch Swans vs Adelaide, was a lovely afternoon. Nice to be back at the footy. Buddy did enough to suggest there's still some life in him yet, but he was pretty gassed for most of the game. I don't think Sydney make the eight but man they look like another era of premiership contention is right around the corner.

yep Swans fans should be excited about the talent they look to be developing. Buddy has barely trained, and will barely train, so it's going to take a while for him to have a full-game impact.
Cameron has been hanging on to that job for a while, not sure many GWS fans will mourn his passing
And i see the Lions got the dreaded "yeah we fucked up" ref admission. Always makes everyone feel so much better.

i think we're just happy to have some size in the 50 and to get some contested marks, a lot of the talent we're bring through are on the lean size or you have papley whos not a big jumper.
I think if buddy can draw a defender or two off some of the other guys, be strong in the air when it is kicked his way and kick the odd one...he's doing his job, no ones expecting the buddy of old to kick 5-6 on the regular
I dont think anyone though the rebuild was ready yet so a lot are just enjoying some wins a season or two earlier than expected!
-
@barbarian Buddy looked to be moving as freely as I’ve seen for some time. He’s still great to watch when he goes to the air when the ball hits the ground and he’s around it.
It’s usually after 5 rounds you get a feel for how things are shaping up, however the media (how many AFL shows are on TV these days???) will be trying to get an early coaching scalp!
-
@act-crusader I think Leon is on the hot seat after last season though. GWS underperfomed, and dropping Coniglio didn't yield the results they hoped it would.
He doesn't come across well in the Amazon doco, and the team is currently playing well below where their talent levels suggest they should be.
I think the club would be very nervous as it appears their premiership window may be closing quickly.
