Best ODI XI - NOMINATIONS - Allrounders
-
this is NZ Cricket. i expect the entire side to be guys who can do both
Astle
MacMillan
Styrus
Oram
Andre Adams
Chris HarrisJames Franklin
Shane Thompson -
i sort of see a problem with how i would approach this
all my favourite NZ ODI players are our bits and pieces wicket-to-wicket bowlers from back in the day. ie lots of those guys i named above. How can you have a NZ ODI team without Chris Harris.
The problem is this. If they were thrown in to a game in 2020, they would get fucking murdered. That dibbly dobbly wicket to wicket stuff is going to get deposited in to the car park over and over again. Bog standard One Day players are going to hammer that shit.
But I'm still gonna pick 'em

@mariner4life Yep Dibbly dobblys have place in a post T20 ODI side. Vettori is the closest that should make it. So I nominate him

I'm of the opinion you judge them in conjunction with where the game was at as a whole, at that time.
Take Glen Turner for instance, average of 47, but a strike rate of only 68 which is unacceptable now days, where at the time it was probably about par. So we'd be mad if he isn't included in this team with those numbers.

I’d take Harris too. Cairns can make the ODI side as a batsman

And this is why you can't pick an All-Time ODI using "conventional metrics". I think you just have to ask yourself "who are our best ODI players of all time" and squeeze them in somehow. If that means playing someone slightly out of position then so what? They only have to play for 11 hours.
