Title is wrong. Should be "Mickey Mouse Final"
i think it's great we have a thread for the 2nd division.
It's not like we have threads for the Championship in English Soccer, or the G-League in the US, or the Q-Cup.
The little guys need their time in the sun too.
I'm thinking I might actually watch this game this year.
Out of interest, do they play it on a full rugby field - or the old half field using the sidelines to score tries?
If you'd watched any of the Ranfurly Shield* matches this year you'd know Napier has a great full sized field and even some proper stands.
*Oh, the Ranfurly Shield is a challenge system where official provinces get to compete against the holder on their home ground. I assume it's not open to baabaas teams such as the Ta$man Chequebook Invitational XV Mako$ as it appears you've never held it?

I haven't.
I only have time during the regular season to watch fixtures involving Division 1 teams.
Though a bit of research on the official website suggests that the only Shield fixture this season was Canterbury vs North Otago.
Who holds it and why did they play this game in Napier?

Hahahha.
So typical of NZR, pretend the Shield doesn't exist then change the NPC when we're on the cusp of making the 1st Division ... and all because we gave the Wellington side of the 1920s a 50 point tonking (back when tries were worth 3 points).
-
@Nepia Well, we can agree on something.
I've been slowly working my way through Terry McLean's book of the 1971 Lions tour - one of his underlying themes is that the NZRU is pretty fucking useless.
In my opinion not much has changed in 50 years, though Tew at least gave some impression of competence.
This year seems to have been a debacle.
Should be blindingly obvious that the first Shield Challenge scheduled next year should be Hawkes vs Ta$man (assuming that you guys will dispatch Northland).
But will NZ Rugby make it happen? My bet is they'll stick to "Work through our processes and let the outcomes take care of themselves".
But maybe they'll show that they're something better than thick, incompetent former rugby players!

Shield isn't up for grabs in a finals match is it, so it can't go north anyway?
Hawkes Bay need to win to ensure they're in the same Division as Ta$man next year - thereby ensuring a fixture takes place.

If we win the NPC will be reformatted into Nth and Sth, if we lose it will stay as it is.

@Chris-B Assuming HB take over the relegated North Harbour fixture list they are due to play Ta$man away so tough titties once again!
That is the sort of thinking that leads to accusations that the outfit is being run by thick, incompetent former rugby players!
-
@Chris-B Right. A crossover would be possible though and you would probably get the next match after Hawkes have lost it. People more unkind than me might call it Karma. There is a price to pay for everything, money is just one thing.
What about the North South thing? For NPC is that going to happen next year?
That might be part of the nefarious NZRU plan too.

I could probably make my peace with that, we have to lose it some time I guess.

Yet another aspect that NZR has been lax on this year - the release of that Deloittes report that identifies provincial player/match budgets.
As I've pointed out numerous times before, Ta$man has consistently been a shoestring team, except for 2018 when our stats were inflated by the costs of hosting a test match.
A joke that has now turned into something widely believed.
We've made the Div 1 play-offs consistently on a shoestring - I'm pretty confident that the 2019 data will validate this again.
And, whilst on this topic - we've made the play-offs every year since we were promoted from Div 2 in 2013. The ONLY team that has done so!
-
@Nepia said in Championship Final - Hawke's Bay v Northland:
@Chris-B Everyone knows that the NZR franchise system bankrolls the bulk of your team - either that or your players play for Farmers gift vouchers.
ah yes, the old NZ Breakers gambit of Pak n Save vouchers. Massive, massive Pak n Save vouchers...
-
its ironic that the area with the most sunshine hours has the ability to consistently make it rain...money
-
@Chris-B said in Championship Final - Hawke's Bay v Northland:
Yeah, really?
Who in last weekend's stellar team is collecting these massive salaries?
Who in the team that played last year's final?
Do you have that NBA stadium "Defence cha cha cha Defence Cha cha cha" ringing in your ears there, Sir Chris, of the Shining armoury??
