The Fern's heaviest bloke - Doing something about it,
-
I'm back and i'm angry,<br />
Height 192 cm , weight 169 kg<br />
I am having gastric banding surgery next week 23/5 ,which with exercise and eating plan should help for some considerable loss.<br />
6 weeks ago decided enough was enough when weight was 177kg and saw my doctor about losing weight. He recommended GB surgery as the most effective solution. Have heaps of tests , including Cardiologist visit, ultrasound on liver, spleen, gall bladder etc. Blood tests for everything,<br />
<br />
Results bp 120/80 collesterol 5.7 , blood sugar 0 (but were signs of pre diabetic stage)<br />
Next stage see surgeon to book in date and start Optifast pre surgery diet need to lose 10 kg prior to op, to lighten liver.<br />
8kg lost in 2 weeks so should be fine by next week.<br />
Cost - now this is the hard bit , i dont have medical insurance so it is going to cost me $14,000 all up, which i have managed to scrape up .<br />
The refund of paid Airfares on planned European trip helped (thank god for travel insurance), My wife;s preggers so had to put off for a year or so.<br />
Once i get below 150kg i can have knee surgery which is desperately needed to exercise properly (old footy injury).<br />
Will post regularly on progress and are deciding between rower or exercycle for my preferred weapon of torture.<br />
." GB surgery is not a magic solution, it is a very good tool to help weight loss "- my surgeon -
FBB, well done. That's the surgery that Aussie Comic Mickey Robbins has had and it really is incredible the difference in him. He looks amazing, and fit as well. Very healthy.<br />
<br />
How's the optifast? Been there done that. Not too bad.<br />
<br />
Great work mate, best of luck. -
fbb - well done. No matter how bad it gets, you can pull back from the brink if you really want it. Get yourself a training partner to motivate your big self when times get tough. As Bart says - the local gym is the place to get help, and once you start combining the walking with the weights you'll blow that shit off your body.<br />
<br />
But get some health insurance before any skin removal surgery you might need <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' /><br />

Interesting thing is, your cholesterol and BP aren't that bad - BP I think is within normal enough limits? [/quote]<br />
<br />
Cholesterol is a touch high - want to keep it under 5. But BP is pretty bloody good, around the recommended safe level (ideally you'd be just under). I have the same thing - no matter my weight or state of fitness, I always hit about 120/80, and my Dad is the same - doctor reckons we've got great genetics for blood pressure, diabetes, and cholesterol, but are more prone to weight gain than e.g. my Mum who is a little bird of a woman, with cholesterol through the roof! -
All the best fbb, have know a couple of people who have had the proceeder and the difference it makes is remarkable.<br />
This is a huge step in the right direction mate and all the best with the coming months, like everyone has said get the right people around you. -
Thanks for the support guys, i will be using this forum for quite a bit of support if you don't mind and joining a gym seems good advice which i will take up.<br />
 As for the BP and cholesterol figures , the doctor was very surprised mine was that low. My wifes 47 kg and her cholesterol is 7.6, cant work that out.<br />
The optifast diet works really well if you stick to it, but living off 3 milkshakes a day is bloody hard work and i crave any solid food. -

<br />
My Mum is the same with weight and cholesterol. But she rarely eats breakfast, drinks a lot of coffee, wine, and scotch, eats rarely but when she does with lots of oils and fats. <br />
<br />
But that is another thing to motivate you - I've always pretty much been more than twice my wife's weight, and I'm only 6' tall! If I can get down below twice her weight, then I'll be pretty happy. Likewise, if you're nearly 4 times the weight of your spouse, and should use that sort of thinking for your big milestones - you get down to three times her weight that'll be your first big goal, then aim for the 2.5 - bloke your height and all that. -

<br />
gees, thats harsh I got to have 5 a day, and could have shakes or bars. Have you tried making it in a blender with some ice? Thickens it out a bit, but you are right. You do miss other flavours - and just chewing. -
horrible thopught that it might be, take some photos - I wish I had some photos from when I was at my fattest, and now.<br />
<br />
This whole thing will snowball, you'll be running marathons in a year!!<br />
<br />
And those photos - when you have those bad days and periods when you can't be fucked - stick on on the fridge door, that'll turn you around!! -

<br />
:shifty: Yeah I reckon it'd be good motiviation. But I just look at some of the work suits I haven't yet thrown out - 127cm! <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' /> And the rugby fan gear I had like t-shirts and jerseys in XXL that hang off a bit, and feel better about it :happy:<br />
<br />
I think when you're starting out you're horrified to think that photos of you at your fattest, with your shirt off, might make it out onto the internet. -
So you're 177 Kg and you're wife is 47Kg? <br />
<br />
I think Nicks suggestion of finding a training partner is a great call and well worth it. Training of any kind is much harder on your own because you are alone with your thoughts and struggles.<br />
<br />
The trick is not to start off with a hiss and a roar, it's to keep your spirits up and do it week in week out for 18 months and for gods sake stay away from junk food or places where it may be. The results will be worth it. -

I found a photo of me in January before losing just 6kg and the difference is very noticable. Definitely a good way to measure progress (the scales can stall sometimes even though you are still making progress).<br />
<br />
Good luck FFB, am sure'll you'll make it. I've found using Barts method of recording as much as possible really good and mainting things as well. Record weight, progress with your exercising, all that stuff. It's amazing how much you can trick yourself into eating crap and not exercising and you can't argue with what you are actually doing when it's in black and white. -
photos - I have a photo from Christmas a couple of years ago...<br />
<br />
WOuld have been topping out at about 120kgs then...<br />
<br />
Yes, that is my Christmas shirt...<br />
<br />
So a photo will do the trick I am sure, and yes, record everything - great when you see times come down and distances / weights increase. And remember, you are not competiting with anyone but yourself on those things!! -
<img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' /> Jeez Bart - comparing that to your topless expose before the wedding, you have nothing but my deepest respect!
<br />
<br />
I probably have a photo of myself at 130kg somewhere, which is scary, but could be good motivation... Should also dig up a photo of me as a gym-junkie 18-19yo while at Uni as a roadmap. :nta -
