Chris Cairns could secure a result like very few. Allegedly my lawyer has advised me to say.

His test career was squeaky clean.

That’s good enough for me. Onya Chris !

Beats Vettori on both counts in the allrounder category. Paddles beats them both by virtue of a hugely superior bolwing stat

With Vettori being a spinner it’s fair to saying bowling averages don’t always tell the whole story ( after all quite a few average better than Warnie )

Cairns was ‘better’ than DV but loses out through all the tests he missed

Paddles batting stats are pretty irrelevant to be honest. He coulda been worse than Chris Martin and he woulda been picked here.

Dan gets my vote if nothing else for the years he spent carrying us. Bowl a shitload on an unsuitable deck. Take wickets. Also keep the scoring rate down. Also come in at 5-120 and score 70-odd to avoid the follow-on. I'm surprised he can walk given his back must be wrecked.

You wouldn’t be so cocky if the A stood for Afghanistan.

@Crucial said in Five Greatest Black Caps of the Past 50 years:

He would if 'A' stood for asshole.

Fellas, my advice is to concede gracefully. Example:

@nzzp said in Five Greatest Black Caps of the Past 50 years:

you've been waiting years for this eh. Quality trolling.

    😉

On the other hand, if the list were 'assholes who played cricket', you'd be in like Flynn (Haddin only counts twice yo)

Legendary arseholes who were also great players would still get to 5 fairly easily over here for Test and ODI.

McGrath, Ponting, SWaugh, Warne, then probably Hayden (redefined opening)

You still going on the arseholes thing?

Waugh probably gets out of that, just.

@nzzp I'd like to have Bond ahead of Vettori but I don't think you can with that few tests.

Vettori was a great servant and made the most of his abilities but wasn't truly world class.

Far from my favourite player but I think it has to be Turner. Average of 47 when there were no muppets. Two Double centuries in drawn series in Caribbean. Century in each innings at Chch to beat Oz. Basically carried the team at least as much as Vettori did. Capable of batting time or going mad. 100 centuries. 300 in a day at 1st class level. Total piston wristed gibbon at times but for me has to be there.

Not without a serious set of arguments.

And don't do it over at Wisden's FB page - as @MN5 knows, there are about a thowwwwwwsand Indian blokes ready to laugh at any selection you make and claiming that none of them are worthy unless they scored a century (even the bowlers) against a Tendulkar-led Indian team. Everything else is invalid.

    Williamson
    Crowe
    Hadlee
    Boult
    Cairns

I want to pick Vettori ahead of Cairns, but he probably only misses out due to fact he was usually only saving games rather than winning them. I know that's harsh on Danny Boy, as he was a bloody champ in a very under performing team.
