@Number-10 Are Walker-Leawere, Farrell and Toala injured?
As @Stargazer has posted - yes, no, yes.
The HB Today this morning has Isaia Walker-Leawere on the subs bench but notes he is carrying a hamstring strain. The HB Today has a 6pm contributions deadline.
The team I posted was taken from the HBRU facebook post this morning with Bryn Evans (not Walker-Leawere) on the bench.
So it seems yesterday afternoon Walker-Leawere was on the bench, but this morning Bryn Evans is on the bench.
Tim Farrell, although played most of the club season, including the semi-final, was not available for higher honours.

@Billsy111 ,should not forget ,it was it was only in the last 20 that the Magpies took control against the Stags last year ,and for a good part of the game were one of the best scrummaging teams the Bay came up against ,to me the Stags look 30-40% stronger than they did last year..I would not underestimate them at home..Bay to win a tight one

@Number-10 I guess they replaced their picture on Facebook, but forgot the one on instagram?
-
@Stargazer dead right!
-
The only reason I can think of for Danny Toala being left out is that he has somehow and miraculously become pregnant. A physical impossibility, but there is no way he should be missing when compared to the two midfield players named.
-
Ash Dixon scores from a rolling maul. McClutchie hits the post. Southland 6-5 after 21 mins.
-
Ash Dixon in again from a rolling maul with McClutchie missing the kick again. Hawke's Bay 10-6 up at half time. Southland probably had more of the play in the 1st half but couldn't come away with a try for all their endeavour. Hawke's Bays set piece working well in tough conditions.
-
Weber's on the field 60secs and gets charged down from a ruck clearance. Southland lead 16 - 10.
-
Pleasants-Tate score his 2nd for the day. All 4 tries scored from the hookers today. Southland lead 16-10 after 51 mins.
-
Hahaha Marshall claiming that Glenn Preston had replaced Mikaele-Tu'u.
-
FFS, the Magpies are straight up awful. 2020 really isn't my year.
-
42 year old Jason Rutledge is on.
-
HB will be ruing missed opportunities. Good to see some wet weather rugby again.

Fuck off.

@Nepia Awful game just nothing went right, have to bounce back next week.

Hope so, will be a home game against @Crucial's lot so hopefully they can put in a good one.
-
Well that sucked. That's all.
-
@antipodean Definitely suited the Stags. Reminded me of when they defended the Ranfurly Shield against Auckland in 2010 where they just defended multiple attacks time and time again. Selby-Rickit, Pleasants-Tate, Lambourn and James all stood up for them in the pack, with Eade's general kicking getting them out of trouble a lot.
Southland probably won't threaten promotion, but they have a much more competitive side this year. Don't see any reason why they can't push for a semi final spot.

Hey @Nepia
Ooops.
Oh dear.
I don't want to win that way bro - I like to see some homegrown players in the team.
-
Geoff Boycott captained Yorkshire for most of the 1970s, but success eluded the team even when Boycott left Test cricket for three years to concentrate on the county game.
Yorkshire put themselves at a disadvantage from 1968 until 1992 by insisting that all its players must have been born within the historic county boundaries of Yorkshire while all the other county teams strengthened themselves by signing overseas Test players. In 1992, the birth qualification rule was first modified to include those educated within the county, a dispensation that allowed Michael Vaughan to play; and was then abandoned altogether. Yorkshire's first overseas player that season was 19-year-old Sachin Tendulkar.
-
I’m really impressed with Southland and their defence, Hawkes Bay were woeful, needs to up his game he struggled in the wet.
-
First half HB threw the ball round, and as Josh Syms said at halftime would need to change the style and play at the other end.
So in the second half it was kick or pick-and-go.
It was one extreme to the other.
And in the last five minutes when they were in the Southland 22 it was still pick-and-go, the backs were not utilised at all.
There just didn't seem to be any tactical appreciation.
Our first game last year was in the rain at Palmerston North.
No need to reference that game then ...
-
Turn the taps on in Invers and the locals love it.
Further proof that Southland would have upset Canterbury in the Ultimate NPC XV comp.
-
-
Did Southland get a win last year? Or was this their first in two years or something?
-
@shark pretty sure they won last year - for the first time in 3 years maybe?
Delighted for them - perennial battlers, but starting a campaign with a win is a big boost.
-
@nzzp confidence and belief is half the battle!

yep - but the comp is a bit borked when you can have all black laden packs of fulltime professionals coming up against the (love him to bits) Jason Rutledge's of this world. The disparity in playing resources is incredible, and doesn't make for a good competition unfortunately.
I don't know how to solve this without turning the NPC into a semi pro feeder comp for Super by the way, and that doens't seem a good option.

yes it does!!
NPC to be a rep competition for club players.
-
@mariner4life so super rugby players who are not ABs are not allowed to play it cos they missed club footy, leaving a 10 week window where they have no rugby?
Or are you making a longer Super season....

the longer Super season is inevitable
Split the comps.
-
@mariner4life so super season sans ABs then, given this is the window for NPC (currently)

i don't have all the fucking asnwers!! and it's Monday morning
but the half-pregnant structure we have at the moment is a bit lop sided.

agreed, but then that applies from NPC upto Super rugby.
I expect Covid is going to be the catalyst that simply forces change

Farrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk.
Went around to a mate from Southlands place for a catch up and to watch the game. Shit idea.
Came home to the misses who is from Southland. Shit idea.
WANTED: New Friend and Misses.
Was a crap game from the magpies. Hard when its perfect weather in HB all year around to then adjust to sideways wind and rain...
