    by surplus they mean NPC players that dont get a super contract? would have that many that would be a huge improvement for them? i kind of feel real NPC stars that miss out on a super contract is still "newsworthy" so cant be that common

    @KiwiMurph Convincing New Zealand to sanction its players playing in Australia will be a tough ask, but NZR is already funnelling players to Japan as a way of coping with the overseas player drain. It has been happening in an unofficial capacity for a number of years, with the likes of Taniela Tupou, Pete Samu and Sekope Kepu moving to Australia in search of opportunities.

    So where's the benefit?

    @antipodean presumably the theoretical benefit would be a more competitive comp.

    As long as they only get our left overs, I'm fine with it.

    Will it increase the risk of poaching of our young school leaving talent (including for the Wallabies after 5 years residency)? If so, then I'm against it.

    At a guess he'll name Lomax.

    Is it poaching if the player leaves to pursue a dream?

    "I wanted to play for the All Blacks, that was the main thing," Lomax said. "And it was about representing my family, getting back to New Zealand.

    "I tried to picture myself playing for the Wallabies and wondering what it would feel like. It probably didn't feel right, to be honest. And I'm happy with how it's going so far."

    The Canberra junior was back in the capital just weeks after making his Test debut for New Zealand, admitting he always had a desire for the All Blacks.

    @antipodean Haha, Lomax was born and raised in NZ, so a Kiwi who moved to Australia. Not a poach.

    Nah I think you'll find he was born in Canberra while his father was playing for the Raiders.

    @antipodean Okay, I stand corrected, but there's no doubt he's a Kiwi and always was. Not a poach.

    Yes you can't deny the cultural pull can be very strong for some, especially in tight families if you grow up watching your parents barracking for a certain team.

    One of my SILs in Qld was telling me that my nieces' school had a footy jersey day instead of school uniform and near half the class of one of them was decked out in All Blacks jerseys. She said near every kid was actually born in Australia.

    I'm curious which Australian schoolboys have been poached by NZ.

    Tiaan Tauakipulu went from NZ to Aust late last year.

    @Bovidae Taniela Tupou?

    By the way, my earlier question was not about past poaches, but a possible increased risk of future poaches. The main culprits are NRL scouts, but if RA wants to widen the net and catch more Kiwi players, I think asking the question is justified.
