SBW set to sign for......
-

I seriously doubt Messam will be moving up SH1, and he knows he can return to the Chiefs at any time. I know the media likes to mention the SBW-Messam connection but Messam's best mate in the ABs is actually Kaino. The Lions tour will be a huge carrot for a lot of veterans.

You'd tend to think not - but, to throw in a speculator - the only reason I could see them signing Messam is if Kaino (especially) or Luatua has given them the tip that they're leaving.

You'd think JK would be hanging around for the Lions but, on the other hand, he'll turn 34 around the start of next Super season, so if he's thinking to pad his bank account with another northern tour of duty, then he's getting short on time.

IIRC, Kaino is contracted until the end of 2018, and Luatua is until the end of 2017. -

Of the recent six that retired two played for more than one.....heaps of guys have done it, hardly an unusual thing to happen. Certainly didn't seem to hinder Ma'a's career too much.

Perhaps if SBW bombs out people can use it as an excuse ?

Actually 3 of them - in addition to Maá, Woodcock played a season with the Highlanders and Mealamu had a season with the Chiefs.
-

Apart from Rok, Kaino & Flavell I can't think of another prominent tenured All Black in the pro-era* who didn't play for another franchise beside the Blues. Toeava, Howlett, Mils, Williams, Woodcock, Weepu/Nonu, Spencer, Lomu, Mealamu. Even guys like Cashmore and Eroni Clarke who were staples in the first 4-5 seasons kicked on to greener pastures.

* not counting guys like the Brookes, Fitzy, Jones etc whose careers were largely pre-S12.
-

John Afoa would be one. He had more AB caps than Flavell for example.

EDIT - and Faumuina if we are including current players.
-

Spencer was only Blues IIRC.

Edit: In NZ, didn't he play for a Saffa team as a kaumatua?
-

Reinforces my point even more. Richie and DC didn't but hardly unusual for other guys to move around. Jonah played for three franchises and he was a rather prominent member of the ABs if memory serves.....
-

So yes as we have probably named most of the top players to have played for more than the one franchise in the last page or 2, it's fair to say that in 20 years, not many have shifted around and the ones that had were either not wanted by that side at the time (Howlett, Mealamu,Toeava), about 6 years past their best (Spencer, Cowan), or had simply fallen out with their coach at the time (Weepu, Nonu, A Williams). Only really a handful of top liners have switched at their own accord in 20 years of Super Rugby (Sorry I should have re-phrased what I had said earlier).

Toronto Wolfpack pulling out of Super League so is SBW a free man again to go chase more money? It's the SBW circus all over again.

@sparky Welp they are playing next season, so it would just be a sabbatical - Warriors gratis would be a good PR move!
You'd have to be a masochist to play for the Warriors - let alone playing for free.

No way I'd put my body on the line for free only to see them play that shit most weeks

depending on if they have money or not but I reckon he'd go somewhere like the Knights or Parra. Teams on the cusp being powerhouses.
"The Roosters are reportedly in the market for..."
