Surely you need more than six teams in order to fill up a season.
Six teams Home and Away means 10 rounds. You can't have semi Finals in a 6 team race so a grand final 11 weeks. That's not going to please the broadcaster.
fuck off with three games for every pairing - boring.
Eight teams home and away Split into top and bottom halves Semi's - Finals
The old Super Comp had 127 games in total. What I propose has 118.
Adding another three teams to the current franchises shouldn't have to dilute the quality too much.
Without all the international travel you don't need 40 man squads. If you restricted teams to 30 you would need to increase the current pool by 40 players. That's should be do-able. If you made the squads 34 you need 72 more than currently rostered.
So you allow each team to bring in four overseas players. Should be plenty wanting to get some footy in. 14 day quarantine before pre-season.
Easy
Sky NZ are probably better off than currently. Sell overseas TV rights - save on travel It's not a perfect world but there's got to be a workable solution out there. I spent five minutes to come up with that.
Just a 6th team is if they go the Tran- Ta$man comp.
If NZ only, then yes, minimum of eight.

Itβs not so much about the results, many factors contribute to that side of it, itβs the player numbers and fan base potential and availability of another stadium.
Northland plus Harbour based at Albany, and Auckland plus Counties at Eden Park covers those both off.
Should have enough support to be viable financially without being hugely disruptive.
Only real alternative is maybe basing one in Tauranga, somewhere where the population is increasing.
You've made me think about this a little harder. For your scenario to work you would need to do away with the Blues and completely rebrand the two new franchises (IMO) otherwise the new team would struggle for audience as fans generally don't just change the team they support because of location.
It doesn't make sense to add extra teams and for one of them not be in amongst 1.5m people when the whole country is just 5m
Jeez, it would be a rough deal on half of Auckland.
One team could be the Kings (of Leon - whichever he chooses to coach).
Dunno about the other team... The Turds?

In order to drum up supporters - Albany Free State
Or Harbour - Already have Waitemata, Kaipara and Mahurangi just add Whangarei, Whangaroa, Rangaunu and Hokianga
edit: forgot Parengarenga

Those names don't look like they'd fit under a team called "Free State".

The Harbour Turds - sounds perfect - owning the dodgy sewerage system!

You would have to say no - that is over 300 players.
When expansion of Super Rugby was proposed In 2009/10 to start in 2011, both Taranaki and Hawke's Bay made moves to form a sixth Super Rugby squad and NZR said no, they couldn't afford it.
A sixth team in a 2011 SR competition may have not been affordable - travel to SA, OZ and all those expenses that add up - but in a beefed up domestic based comp I think itβs possible.
But then again what that looks like and what it means for NPC are the big unknowns.

8 SR teams?
They might as well go to 10 NPC teams and have a single competition. Everyone plays everyone home and away
4 teams to drop to heartland or merge with a larger team
Bye bye Northland Southland Hawkes Bay and Ta$man
Northland, Southland, Ta$man and Harbour

Honestly, if there is any serious chat about a domestic 'Super Rugby' comp, just rebrand the NPC and play it home and away with byes and a six team finals series over 31 weeks from late Feb to October. If there's international play during the season this just provides the opportunity for teams wearing Cambridge blue and maroon and gold to win a couple games.
-
I'll add to this that I haven't given any thought to funding. But these teams all expect to play around half that season anyway, and the SR franchise monies from NZ Rugby should also be distributed among the 14 sides. On top of that they'd need to also put some dosh into marketing to pimp it up a bit and maybe differentiate it from a traditional NPC further by way of branding, hype, uniform adjustments etc. I think having each team's full complement of All Blacks available for most if not all of the comp would be a big leg up on a current NPC anyway, plus any additional overseas based players who might be available.

Southern hemisphere rugby could be set for a major shakeup , with doubts emerging over the ongoing existence of SANZAAR. Sources tell Newshub that the governing body could disband altogether to leave international unions to go it alone, in one of a handful of key recommendations to come from the 'Aratipu' report commissioned by New Zealand Rugby in April. Newshub can reveal that SANZAAR's days of running the competition appear to be over from next year. As it stands, Super Rugby involves teams from New Zealand, Australia, South Africa and Argentina. The draft 'Aratipu' review recommends major changes from 2021 - namely a trans- Ta$man competition with the addition of a team from the Pacific. Without teams from South Africa and Argentina, SANZAAR's governance of the competition would inevitably cease. The proposed changes to the competition have been welcomed by those involved. "As long as it keeps the qualities that are making this competition really successful," says Blues coach Leon MacDonald. "Strong teams right across the board, strong games... there's a little bit of a recipe here that as long as they don't deviate too far away from would be well received." It's understood that is what's seen as the missing piece to the Super Rugby puzzle and was identified by review chair Don Mackinnon from the outset. "Do we look at a Heineken cup type playoff model in the short to medium term whereby we're looking at the best of the best playing," Mackinnon queried at the announcement of the review in April. Crusaders coach Scott Robertson has also expressed his desire for there to be something more for the Super Rugby winners. "I love the idea of how we can connect up if we have a competition down here and then we can link to the north, that would make it pretty special," Robertson suggested in May. SANZAAR's sole purpose moving forward would be to oversee the Rugby Championship. But Tuesday's developments suggest that after quarter of a century, southern hemisphere rugby's united front could soon be over.
