North vs South
-
@Canes4life Basically the same criteria they use for State of Origin then.
-
@Bovidae said in All Black Coach - Ian Foster:
He also mentions eligibility for the North-South game - the first province you played for.
At senior level or at junior level?
-
silly criteria to be a real island of origin kind of deal
but probably the best was to even the odds because canterbury and otago draw some talent for rugby and university retrospectively, evens out the much larger population base of the north
-
“We think the best legacy thing for us to do is to pick players on the first province they played for because the choice they made when they played first class rugby for that province was probably the start of their move into the professional game. So we think that’s the best criteria,” Foster said.
I suppose that means after leaving school.
-
Sam Whitelock made a good point in an interview the other day. He said he was excited to play for the North because it allowed him to play with guys he rarely had a chance to play with. This criteria will stop that happening which is a shame.

That's why I thought your high school would be the best criteria as it mixes up the teams more. I'll have a word to Foster.
-
Yeah stupid but trying to balance the Islands I guess
-
High School or current province would've better. First province sucks. Scott and Jordie Barrett like mentioned above, Brad Weber who played few games for Otago then moved. Shit criteria really.

Weber still does the Dunedin RFC Fin when he scores, Dunners is still important to him, i think he'll be ok

As long as he gets to wear a black and white t shirt under his whatever coloured South Island jersey he'll be fine.
-
@Kiwiwomble only coz he was a gross Castle Street breather
-
So North will have Smith at halfback, with Hall or Nock on the bench?
-
@Kiwiwomble Only the club, not the province though

You think that either of those two have a chance of leap frogging TJ?

of course...Dunedin's not a province, he was a big deal in club rugby for a few years, robbed he didn't get more games for otago, loved seeing him tear it up for the sharks though

speaking from experience, a lot of the best Otago rugby players come from Hawke's Bay
-
@Tim you are kidding right?

@Canes4life Read the thread.

Hookers:
North: Coles, Aumua, Parsons, Dixon
South: Taylor, Coltman, ... Makalio (although his first province was - according to Wikipedia - Wairarapa-Bush, does Heartland count?)If it had been based on school, it would have been:
North: Taylor, Coles, Coltman, Aumua, Parsons ... Makalio
South: Dixon ... Ricky Jackson/Brodie McAlister? -
Laulala and Lomax are eligible for the SI now.
-
This criteria kind of diminishes the point of a North vs South game. The whole tribal factor is what these sorts of games are built around. I feel they've missed the mark and I think the care factor will be alot lower than it could have been.
IMO they should let the players decide who they play for, but once they pull on a jersey they can't switch down the track.

They should have just done Probables vs Possibles.

i saw an idea going around, two coaches named and they just get to pick their own squads, taking turns, stream it and make it a bit of an event of it

that was his point...first top div team was in the south but if Heartland is included then the 'rapa is his first team

For North:
Hodgman on the bench at loosehead.
Rettalick isn't available. Goodhue to start. GCT is a bench option. Any other lock options? Not much depth.
ALB/Ioane is probably better than Laumape/ALB.
Robinson to start at six, Savea on the bench.
Black on the bench.
Must be a better option than Aso.
For South: Oli Jaeger is a tighthead not a loosehead.
-
@Tim Savea on the bench? Is this another joke of yours?
Didn't Hodgman play for Canterbury first aswell?
-

Yeah, Hodgman did. He replaces Jaeger.

No love for the forgotten man, MMT.
