If being an island and 5m population made beating the virus so super duper easy, how come Ireland has 25k cases and over 1600 deaths?
2 different political systems on the one island with no desire to put up a physical border again
Lots of contact with the UK one of the major epicentres of the virus
Ski holidays in Italy and France at the moment the virus took off
3 hours flight gets you to multiple destinations in Europe. 3 hours flight from NZ barely gets you to Australia
Cheltenham horse races at the time the virus was taking off
Not only flights but also ferries into Ireland/NI
Population density higher in Ireland than NZ
Socialising in pubs is what the Irish do, much more so than in NZAnd so on. It's a great achievement, but don't be turning into a smug self-satisfied Kiwi now please!

I don't see long haul travel of short meetings coming back anytime soon. I also thought flying across the world to take a meeting then fly home always sounded so inefficient
Was visiting a mate of mine on the weekend - was a mentor to me 20 years ago, and the whole time since about 1998 has worked remotely in central NSW - even on dialup. He never saw the point of work junkets and agrees with your point above: things are going to change.
Particularly once companies see the budget savings.

This. A large part of our success is our isolation and a closed border, we shouldn't kid ourselves about anything different.

@Snowy direct is fine for some stuff, but for anything other than basic home/contents/car, a broker is usually better given some of the people you talk on the phone know less than you sometimes...
That was a direct advert, but yes calling doesn't always have a good outcome. I won't elaborate.

Been informed we're staying this way for the foreseeable future. Occupancy rate in our buildings < 20%
Really need pubs to open and sport to commence again if 40 hours WFH with two cats is the majority of my social interaction each week.

I have spoken to a couple of patients recently who's workplaces are encouraging working from home. One of them, the Auckland Council is apparently actively trying to reduce the number of its workers in the city so it can either sell or re-let some of its buildings

Well that is some gaster flabbered. They are also sealing part of my road - not enough to actually be sensible but a token effort that I will take.

Yes, most of the fawning over Ardern is cringeworthy, but those who want to negate the NZ sacrifice of jobs and income and home schooling and mental health effects of lockdown to work together and get the virus under control, can fuck right off.
Hang on a second? Who are those?
I thought it was quite clear that at best, I was completely taking the piss with my comments, at worst, turning into Stephen Jones as my admiration was hinged with jealousy.
I would argue that Irelands response, along with Germany, are ones that their countries can be damn proud of. They shouldn't be trivialised because of some dick measuring competition against a country which geographically speaking, they couldn't have less in common with.

@canefan because there's going to be a shortage of office space right?
Nothing like trying to catch a falling knife
Commercially, Councils are late to the party, inefficient, and have no real consequences for cocking up. Accordingly, they cock up often. now's teh time to get out of commercial property as Council are getting into it

It is part of our success, everything else was the other part of the success and we can rightfully pat ourselves on the back for that part

Watching a peice on TV1 news makes me very worried about us not using our key weapon in keeping this virus st bay: our border
With those in isolation, at the start or end of thier 14 days able to mingle, and on walks outside not maintaining social distancing from general public (or more public not staying clear of them)
FFS...our border is the single most powerful weapon we have right now, not enough attention to it will likely see fresh outbreaks.

That was fucking ludicrous. Unbelievable.

just out of interest, what does that look like? What if it takes 3 years to burn itself out? What if a vaccine is never found?
You guys cool just doing your own thing for a while?

I think that bed has been made right? Government is hoping that AUS come along for the ride, but the border is effectively shut now until a vaccine or quick border test becomes available.
I can't see how they backtrack on that now.
-
@mariner4life we will be doing our own thing for a while, not sure how they can do things otherwise.
Open for any and all and take it on the chin?
Restrictive travel? We have the budget travellers who come for months, would they be happy in quarantine for 14 days?
Unsure what the big picture looks like, but sure as shit while most of the world is under the pump I will happily use our borders to control this thing in the short term.
