@mariner4life Increasing the pace of the game might make for a better spectacle. What genius came up with that idea?

    pithy

But this bloke V'Landys has come in and just smashed everything. First game up and running. Better broadcast deal in the midst of a recession. Made the product a better spectacle. And he's done it in 2 months. All while keeping racing going in NSW.

By all accounts he's a total fluffybunny, but he's an effective fluffybunny (insert sex joke)

Now we wait for the coaches to adapt and fuck everything up again. Fatigue and chaos are the things coaches hate the most. So you arrive at where AFL and rugby are.

What quick changes could you make to rugby that would speed it up?

Also, just seen the replay of Radley's elbow injury. That's a bit of a shit act by Milford actually. I get that it's tacklers that the "chicken wing" law is aimed at, but this was no different

If Milford didn't do that, or miss tackles, you wouldn't even know he was playing.

I'm sure Vlandys is effective. As I understand it, it's a record deal in headline only. $1.8 for five seasons (2018-2022) is worth more than $2.3 for the last three and another four.

Everyone complained about the slowdown in the tackle and the stupidity of the two refs. Maybe it took someone like V'landys to make the simpletons running the game understand that.

Rugby is more difficult because it involves a contest. But not increasing the bench would be a good start, as would speeding up the time taken to restart the game.

basically, ruck infringements (mainly laying on too long) instead of being a penalty, is just 6-again. No stoppage. No kick for touch. No chance for a team to hit the reset button on its defence. Just play on. It's allowing teams to get on a role, and to get long passages of possession if the other team doesn't keep the ruck quick.

Main outcome is the big boys in the middle are getting tired. And therefore you can either kill them through the middle with quick guys, or their defense has to compress to cover the middle, and you have the option of hitting them wide.

    Thus far it's been brilliant

@mariner4life Cheers. Yeah that does sound like a good way to speed up the game and tire the big boys out. Must have happened in the Warriors game but I must have been too dopey to click on to it happening.

I think if there is a downside , and maybe it isnt a downside, depends how you look at it I guess ,

I think we may see more score blow outs like last night,

When a team gets on a roll, it seems the floodgates really open up more than they used to

Giving away dumb penalties, opposition making easy metres in the middle of the park, poor 5th tackle kicks and execution, soft tries let in. Nostalgia always gets me

And there is a problem, why? Could not have happened to a nicer side (Storm aside...)

The bunker sure does overturn some skillful tries. The pedantry for real time collisions robs the sport of genuine highlights.

I haven't watched any full games but have all teams been cynical in deliberately slowing the play-the-ball down on the first tackle to allow their defensive line to set? From what I have read that was a tactic Penrith used against the Warriors, although this wasn't used as a reason for the loss by Kearney and co.

Conceding a penalty and 6-again after the first tackle isn't much of a disadvantage if the ref won't reach for his yellow card.

Newcastle are legit. They were bloody good yesterday, and Kalyn Ponga is a fucking star. The new kid, Bradman Best is going to be a gun for a long time as well. They've got tough forwards, Pearce is leading them around without overplaying anything, their wings are both dangerous, and Ponga has all the ability in the world. Look destined for the Top 4.

The Gold Coast won a game for the first time in a year! Yes it was only over the Tigers, who were never going to win two on the bounce, but still, a win!

At this stage, Parra, Roosters, Newcastle and Manly are looking good. Canberra and the Storm should probably play finals. Pretty much everyone else is making up the numbers. GC, Warriors, Bulldogs all nailed on for the bottom 4, probably to be joined by the Broncos unless some big moves are made.

    Also, fuck Manly, hahahaha
Wayne Bennett is a coach 15 years past his best. He's going to leave Souths a disaster zone.

What's weird about this is that they're still being conservative when kicking on the last so as to avoid 7 tackle sets.
