@Stargazer @Bovidae if crowds are limited or non-existent why bother with a stadium of any size at all?

You just need to be able to position the cameras and control access.

Somewhere like Western Springs or Waitakere would suffice wouldn't it?

You still need the camera positions. Aside from EP and NH, I can't think of many around Auckland that would be suitable (maybe Pukekohe - also close to the airport?)

Even their training base at Alexandra Park is a possibility, but would need scaffolding, etc. And all of this comes back to how much money EP want to open πŸ™‚

I guess there is already a lot of in place infrastructure for getting decent camera work and in HD in the bigger stadiums. Wiring, and shit

@nzzp I expect the cost to open a stadium just for players, TV crew and support staff is still significantly lower than that for having crowd control (security, catering, clean-up after)

Amongst the noise around restart, I have missed what is restarting?

What's the new format?? Do we only play NZ teams?

"Super Rugby", 10 weeks of home and away matches between the NZ teams.

So it's essentially just preseason games with no real thing to play for?

Every team gets two byes, therefore two matches to watch every week.

Crusaders get to sit out the first week.

Yeah I doubt there would be much difference in cost. The Blues have two viable options and can have them compete against each other to force the price down

I did see an article mention health and safety sign off is causing a delay too. Maybe that was more for Christchurch? However during the level two announcement Eden Park did tweet out it's new distancing protocols.

The competition is a month away and last for ten weeks. What happens if limited crowds are allowed during the tail end? Corporate boxes and members spread out over the whole stadium maybe? They should lean towards Eden Park because of this possibility. Yes I'm saying this selfishly as I have an expensive but now worthless ticket

still a member. Every year I tell myself not to renew, and every year I wind up doing it. I think I'm up to 11 seasons in a row now.

Got a second ticket for my boy this year, but just for teh Blues. We struggle to find time to get to the Mitre10 cup, and just pick up AB tickets to go with a wider group. Prior to this year, it was kind of a form of child abuse

I reckon, under the laws, corporate boxes should be allowed to opne, with max ten in them. If that is going to make some money? But why is that any dif than a restaurant or pub, probably better as there is only 10 per room. Plus one server if required.

Sunwolves to relocate to Australia as part of new Aussie Super Rugby plan

Sunwolves to relocate to Australia as part of new Aussie Super Rugby plan

RA has released a return-to-play strategy with Western Force and possibly Japan's Sunwolves joining the four Australian Super Rugby teams.

NZR and Sky will still want the "product" to look good on TV so they will favour the major stadiums. Although it is the franchises that pay for the use of the stadiums and money is in short supply for them.

You also need to accommodate the commentators, TMO, etc which isn't always easy at a ground of lesser quality. I've seen first-hand how the commentary at 1st XV games are organised and I don't think that would be ideal for SR, particularly if the weather is shit.

@Bovidae It will be interesting to see where they'll end up playing in Chch. They do broadcast Farah Palmer Cup games played at Rugby Park, but I can't remember whether that's with sufficient camera angles (as in sufficient for a good SR product).

I don't know which other options they have other than Orangetheory Stadium and Rugby Park. I assume they won't move games to Trafalgar Park in Nelson, Lansdowne Park in Blenheim or South Canterbury's Alpine Stadium in Timaru, because that would involve too much travel, esp for the visiting team.

Meanwhile, it’s understood negotiations are ongoing between the Blues and Crusaders over fees to access their usual home grounds of Eden Park and Orangetheory Stadium, respectively.

Stuff has been told the franchises are seeking reduced rates for ground use that take into account the fact they are unable to open their doors to fans. In the meantime their home venues have been left unconfirmed.

It’s understood it costs the Blues around $30,000 just to open the doors of Eden Park and, understandably, they are seeking a discount on that to let just a few hundred in for a game that is for all intents and purposes made for TV.

@Chris I'm not sure that NZR should be doing this, allowing players outside of squads in (wait can the Chiefs get BBBR? πŸ˜‰ ) ... or was Whitelock supposed to be a late season arrival for the Crusaders?

Yeah cos otherwise players would be totally taking advantage of this in our next pandemic!

@Chris So who'll end up on the bench, Strange or Dunshea or Romano? That's assuming Barrett and Whitelock will be in the starting XV. Strange probably has most potential for the future; Romano is in his last season.
